Steering wheel

Can anyone tell me where I can purchase or have custom made a 28/29 spinded steering wheel that is 2 inches less in diameter than my 17 inch standard stock wheel. I have a nice 29 Roadster Pickup. The wheel hits my stomach, I'm not that big, making driving uncomfortable. I heard it's called a "fat boy" wheel. Looking for some help. Bob

Hello Mr.Bob sir, I am a new guy to these Model A's , but it looked to me that the steering wheels on model T's were smaller .. I don't know if they would fit an A.

You can order lower seat springs from LeBarron & Bonney.

Re: Steering wheel

On a non-stock Model A, I cut a 17-1/2" wheel down to 16-1/2" by cutting off the old ring after stripping the wheel rim bare, rolling a new rim from 3/8" rod, welding it on and sending the wheel out to a craftsman who cast a new rim. not cheap, but solved a real problem. Another consideration is that you might get additional clearance by cutting down the seat springs a bit. The better fitting steering wheel and seat bottom made a big difference in the driving comfort of my car.

Bob, welcome to the family!! Pickup cabs are real cozy - Often wonder if folks were that much smaller back then. My wife and I aren't large people and we are challenged getting into and out of our Roadster.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the "Fat Man" steering option was for the Model T. If you are unable to source a smaller Model A steering wheel, you may consider using a Steering Wheel Adapter. This will give you a much greater selection for steering wheels. But, I would be concerned the smaller diameter would make turning more difficult.

I solved this problem by throwing away the back rest cushion spring, and substituting a 2 inch layer of foam over a piece of half inch plywood, cut to match the spring size. I installed the vinyl over that and it sets one back a few inches to make room.
