49-53 Loadamatic "101"

10 Attachment(s)
Sometimes i go for a long time and never do or even discuss the 49-53 Loadamatic. This week i have three of them in the shop for work , with some pretty desperate customers to boot!! No problem we will get them all done this week or first of next week at the latest.
This one i checked out today based on odd pattern of igntion failure the customer was having. Put distributor as recieved on tester to see the spark come and go with a very intermitant action with and without vacuum.
Pretty easy to see the main feed wire to the pints was frayed and had been taped at some point in time. (we can fix that) then i noticed the contact bolt coming thru the unit was loose and shorted as well! Ok lets press of the gear after removing the swedged gear pin ( i hate these) but this one actually come out with just a peck or two with small punch. Upon tear down upper plate was removed as well as the vacuum cAN (ALSO DEFECTIVE ).Lead wire had two shorted places and will be replaced as well as the points, condensor etc. Clened up and back together tested on machine and it should run another 100,000 or so.
Also check supplied ignition coil and cleaned it up with new coil lead and ready to ship to customer. Should be a very happy camper.....:eek:
Lat pic is the coil test after testing and cleaning it up......very good coil

Doesn't that system use an Echlin IC-8 coil?

Bubba,

Thanks for publishing this. The "Restoration Guys" can't do a converted SBC, so they have to go with what they have. I know the "Loadamatic" in my original '51 works very well. Thanks for getting this discussion back to the "Real World". The "Loadamatics are Junk" people have probably only seen units like you are showing here.

I gotta agree with Tub, everything working as it should and stock engine and correct carb, the loadamatic works very well. Start changing carbs and or cam, and it's has issues, that's where the delco ones come in to play.
Martin.

My bone stock Mercury dizzy is in need of a rebuild.
I'm having a hard time which way to go? Have the loadamatic rebuilt by Bubba or go with the SBC conversion. No judging on my car.
Whats recommended? Pros. Cons of both
Thanks in advanve. Randy

Thank You Bubba!

What Good timing!

I just supplanted a new engine in my 49 Merc (truck) and I know that the
load-o-matic is less than pristine...
...On my 'to do' list is both Carb job and Distributor tune up
..So your article comes at a very oppor"tune" time...

Thanks for all you do...
I know that the hard work and effort in documenting the process is time consuming...
...Your efforts are much appreciated by so very many, not only here in
North America but around the world.

Your well thought out tech/articles will make a tremendous impact on
maintaining and preserving our old Ford's for generations to come..
Keep up the good work

And most importantly,
Thanks for sharing,

We Salute You!
