A' & B' float levels ? ? ?
 

First question; are float levels for the B' carbs the same as the A' Zenith carbs, at 5/8" below the upper castings mounting flange? If so, OK
and if not, what should they be set at?
Second question; what, in general, causes a float to either stick or not seal at all? I built one of Tom Endy's carb test stands for float levels & jet flow rates to be used on a friends carb that was giving us fits - also to rebuild & test the carb for my B' engine.
Here is the problem..................
We started off with 2 carbs and 2 leaking needle / seat assemblies for the floats. I then had 3 new needle assemblies and 2 complete rebuild kits with new needles in them also; everything was bought from Brattons!
Out of "5" new needle /seat assemblies right out of the package, 3 of them leaked worse than the old ones we removed, 1 seeped somewhat but would not hold a steady float level, and after about 10 to 12 minuets the gas level was creeping up past the forum recommended 5/8" float level to a point that would cause the carb to leak really bad if left unattended for any period of time. The 5th assembly seemed to work the best :o, but it began leaking past the float level after about 30 minuets - I guess that is what the tank shut off is for inside the car?
Is there anything that can be done to remedy this situation with the NEW needle assemblies currently available? Has anyone disassembled them and tried using valve lapping compound on the brass seat to improve the odds?
I have rebuilt Hollys & Carters, Stromberg 97s, and even the old Rochester fuel injection systems for the Corvettes - never had this much bad luck with any of them in the past :( Thanks, Steve

The FUEL level for a "B" carb is 1/2 to 5/8 inch below lip of the of bowl.
The fuel level for a "A" carb is 9/16 to 5/8 inches from the gasket surface of the bottom casting, both with the engine not running.
