59 AB Starter Bendix drive I removed the starter Bendiix drive, cleaned it , replaced the spring and now ready to reassemble.
Do you leave the spiral gear area as is, or is there a proper, none greasy lube that should be used. I believe you do not want something that holds dirt and debris like grease or oil in the spiral gear. Thank you Fordbarners. |
Re: 59 AB Starter Bendix drive Any suggestions on the Bendix lube or not to lube issue. ? Thank you Fordbarners.

Re: 59 AB Starter Bendix drive I clean the Bendix and leave it dry. No oil or grease at all. Works well for me. Some have suggested lightly oiling it but I think that can gather dirt. Ken

Re: 59 AB Starter Bendix drive I always oil it, old cars new cars. dirt shouldn't get in there and if it did It would also
get in the throwout bearing right? These are pretty well sealed up unless your bendix cover fell off....... |
Re: 59 AB Starter Bendix drive Clean and dry here to. If it feels like it wants bit of lubrication I use graphite powder.

Re: 59 AB Starter Bendix drive Per Ford Service Bulletin 11350 .... clean but DO NOT dip or immerse in oil, gasoline, benzine, etc if unit contains rubber parts - i.e. 10 tooth "rubber" drive part #91A-11350. The 10 tooth "Spring" or 9 tooth "Barrel" type may be okay for that .... see Ford Service Bulletin 11000 to ID Ford Starter Motor and its corresponding Drive Part #.
At production Ford used a zinc oxide thin grease #M-4648-B but I don't know a current substitute. In lieu of that, Ford said use (straight) 10w oil on threads, and on the tube and its washer at the base of the threads, then move pinion back and forth to distribute the oil. No other lube required. Your particular starter and drive may vary from original but the Service Bulletin is still a good guide. |
Re: 59 AB Starter Bendix drive CRC, Dow Chemical, and a few others manufacture dry moly spray lubricants that will not attract dust or other crud to stick. I use a product that is similar to Dow Molykote spray lube and it's useful as lubricant on anything you don't want to get coated with crap in service. The stuff has a quick drying resin binder that holds it to the surface and it stays on there a long time.
