Transmission question
 

Greetings (by the way, I searched for this issue and I am sure it has been covered before but could find nothing to answer my question...) I am relatively sure this transmission has never been rebuilt or even serviced other than top off with oil.

Transmission occasionally grinds getting the lever into first at a standstill. Slowly getting worse over the last year so I know I have a problem. I have a few tricks to make it slip in but for the most part, I cannot quickly slip it into first gear without a grind.

Jack, have you checked your clutch adjustment? also if your idle is too high it may also grind so I would check those 1st then if it still does grind get back to us.

Could be a number of things other than the trans. How fast is your idle set at, how heavy is the trans. oil, is the clutch adjusted for the right amount of pedal?
You need a heavy oil to slow the gears down, maybe a good time to drain, perhaps flush and refill?

On one of my roadsters, I had the same problem. After constantly adjusting the clutch, I found that the adjusting nuts on the pressure plate fingers had not been locked down and were way out of adjustment. This could be easily seen through the inspection plate on top of the bell housing. This was a rebuilt pressure plate and the nuts on the fingers were not peeded to keep them from rotating. If the clutch adjustment does not ssolve the problem, I would look in the inspection cover to at least check things out.

Also check the clutch arm for cracking. A few have done that lately.

I had a similar problem, mostly due to a pilot bearing that was gummed up with old grease/oil/crud and was difficult to turn.
