Fram C4P is available at most auto supply stores.

Re: canister oil filter

For filters for my '51, I usually go to NAPA and buy their house brand, "NAPA Gold". I hear they are made by "Wix" and are of a high quality. Every time I went to NAPA to buy one, they had them in stock.

Speaking of Fram filters, I have read on the H.A.M.B. they have a bad reputation for being cheaply made and are prone to falling apart. This may be on the "spin-on" filters only. Does anyone know if this pertains to the cartridge filters as well? I ask because I bought a couple on closeout from Rock Auto last winter for a a very good price, but am kind of reticent to use them.

Re: canister oil filter

Is there only one canister for all flat heads regardless of the year, so any year flat head if it has a canister filter system they are all the same ?

Re: canister oil filter

The year of the engine wouldn't matter, it would be the year of the filter. The by-pass filter is a removable part and an add-on accessory on many years. Like almost all removable part you can find any year on about any year!! That said, in general they are all the same.

Re: canister oil filter

All Ford Canada 8RT truck engines had tall canisters for a filter maybe twice as long as the 8BA car engines.

The canisters generally are all the same but there are dimension differences between some cartridge mfg's. Nothing to be overly concerned, they will work but they aren't identical. That application has been in catalogues for so long that any mistakes would have been discovered and corrected long ago.

I've used fram oil filters in a wide range of vehicles and equipment for years and never a problem with any of them. I've heard some comments as to their being inferior quality but have never seen any evidence of it. Same with Champion spark plugs.
I've got a "Varcon" oil filter in the 52 Merc. Bet nobody remembers them.

40 - 48 is different than 49 - 53. They will not interchange.

"I've got a "Varcon" oil filter in the 52 Merc. Bet nobody remembers them" Ralph, you need to change out that filter, Macleod's Hardware has been gone for what, 40 years? Used to buy flathead fuel pumps there for $2.65

Varcon I believe was a private branded Krallinator.

I know very little about post 48 engines! Was thinking in terms of pre 49, thanks Kube. Also, I use a modified oil filter system (with a sprin-on filter) and not the by-pass, anyone know the filter numbers for the post 48 by-pass filter?

For the tall canister used on truck engines the Wix 51503 is a direct replacement. It also comes with the correct gasket.

I am with you there - most of what I know about '49 - '53 came to me pretty much by accident :)
I am fairly certain the '49 - '53 housing uses the same filter cartridge as the '40 - '48.
The body of the filter appears to be the same diameter and depth. It's the mounting bracket that is different.

If anyone is interested in filter comparison:

Like I posted earlier a lot of auto parts stores locally will have the oil filters cut apart so you can see what is inside. Frame is by far the poorest constructed filter I have ever seen. I guess they work to a degree, but if you are interested in quality they are not it.

In a by-pass filter application it is a little different, but Frame still uses poorer quality filter material and construction than just about anything out there.

You got it. I knew it would have to be another Canadian to recognize Macleods Varcon name. . It looked so clean and solid when I took the filter out that i took a chance and re-used the Varcon. Its a good strong looking filter with a metal case. Much like Fram.
I'm buying mostly Baldwin filters lately since they are the closest available.
