Re: canister oil filter 1 Attachment(s)
Fram C4P is available at most auto supply stores.

Re: canister oil filter For filters for my '51, I usually go to NAPA and buy their house brand, "NAPA Gold". I hear they are made by "Wix" and are of a high quality. Every time I went to NAPA to buy one, they had them in stock.
Speaking of Fram filters, I have read on the H.A.M.B. they have a bad reputation for being cheaply made and are prone to falling apart. This may be on the "spin-on" filters only. Does anyone know if this pertains to the cartridge filters as well? I ask because I bought a couple on closeout from Rock Auto last winter for a a very good price, but am kind of reticent to use them. |

Re: canister oil filter Is there only one canister for all flat heads regardless of the year, so any year flat head if it has a canister filter system they are all the same ?
|
Re: canister oil filter The year of the engine wouldn't matter, it would be the year of the filter. The by-pass filter is a removable part and an add-on accessory on many years. Like almost all removable part you can find any year on about any year!! That said, in general they are all the same.

Re: canister oil filter All Ford Canada 8RT truck engines had tall canisters for a filter maybe twice as long as the 8BA car engines.

Re: canister oil filter "I've got a "Varcon" oil filter in the 52 Merc. Bet nobody remembers them" Ralph, you need to change out that filter, Macleod's Hardware has been gone for what, 40 years? Used to buy flathead fuel pumps there for $2.65

Re: canister oil filter Varcon I believe was a private branded Krallinator.

I am fairly certain the '49 - '53 housing uses the same filter cartridge as the '40 - '48. The body of the filter appears to be the same diameter and depth. It's the mounting bracket that is different. |

On both accounts |
Re: canister oil filter If anyone is interested in filter comparison:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YIcFgjEikUY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8hvUNXv5Bg0 Like I posted earlier a lot of auto parts stores locally will have the oil filters cut apart so you can see what is inside. Frame is by far the poorest constructed filter I have ever seen. I guess they work to a degree, but if you are interested in quality they are not it. In a by-pass filter application it is a little different, but Frame still uses poorer quality filter material and construction than just about anything out there. |
