Serious about blocks.

Well, now that the proof is there that the blocks make real engines, I suppose it is time to have people start contacting me with serious interest. I have a few builders that I know are interested. What I need to know right now is what blocks to cast first and how many. From there I can make a plan for the next few months and proceed to ramp up into production.

I prefer email.

Hi Tod,
has any price range ever been discussed?
would think that would be important to know.

thx!

It has been tossed about here and there. For the stock A or B style I plan to keep them under $2000.00. The 5 mains will be special order, and aluminum will be in the higher 2k range due to sleeves, valve seats, and inserted main bearings.

I'll be buying them right from AER Inserted and ready to roll when they become available that way

I would think your 1st line of your customers would be the engine builders/rebuilders... I surely cannot do that work myself and suspect many do not have the proper tools if they had the skills and besides, better to let those who do this work day in and day out to do it right the first time...

I think less than $2k is nice... so a complete long block would be? ~$5K... not bad to a brand new (truly new) engine...

I know at some point my block is not going to last, one band-aid on the block water jacket already and I really don't care to gamble on an 85 year old piece of iron...

I am sure every rebuilder is or will be very soon.... They can offer a rebuild with a choice of a new or used block and price it accordingly. it would be a no brainer for all of them as well as for the consumer, as that's where I feel your niche will be..
I and many others are waiting for that to happen..

Thanks Tod

I have to agree that builders will be the largest market. They have the contacts and equipment to finish a generic block to desired customer specs. I don't know how many builders there are around but I would guess quite a few.

Plus it will be warrantied vs me supplying my own parts. The Total costs would be about the same either way... Let's get these things produced and delivered, you may have a hard time keeping up, but that's a good thing.
This is a huge turning point for the good of our hobby thanks to your efforts...

Totally agree with this statement.

Did I read some time back that the Burlington cranks were also being brought back?

They have been back for quite a while. I used one in my last build which I installed only last week..

Re: Serious about blocks.

I'm thinking the customer should arrange with his engine builder to take delivery of the new block. That way the builders learn a new block is available and will start recommending it on their own.

Saves contacting and advertising expense for now and until the demand is demonstrated and production can be matched to anticipated future demand.

Just thinking out loud!

Great news. I doubt I would ever want one, but a wonderful development nonetheless.

Are we running out of used blocks, is that the reason for this endeavour ?

Where would you get a 5 main crank to fit your block?
