Adjusting valves

Do you adjust the ex and intake at same time and how is the best way to determine when the valve lifters are on heal of cam.Be nice to have the tool that fits in place of dist to give this info. Engine is on a stand ,heads off,

There is such a tool, but don't really think it is needed. There are several different styles actually, this is one the Mart posted a while back.

Re: Adjusting valves

Yes,big help,I like marking the front pulley in 90 * quarters ,pretty simple..

Couple of additional "tools":

This is a simple enough task that the "tools" are not really necessary at all.

Re: Adjusting valves

It depends where the engine is to make it easier or harder. If I'm building an engine the first thing I do is the valves before I install the pistons, it makes it easier turning the engine over. In fact I usually do the valves with just the cam in. I just go down the line, install a couple of bolts in the front of the cam to turn the cam, Turn the cam and watch the lifter untill the lifter is top, then turn the cam 1/2 turn and that lifter will be on the heel. If your turning the crank, turn it one complete turn and the lifter will be on the heel. Walt

I'm just lazy, I uz the 180 deg method. Eliminates thinking, always works.

Re: Adjusting valves

Don-

This is the sequence I use:

When you pull of the intake you will find one of the combinations listed on the left (the first two valves listed). If you find an “a” set opened you use all of the “a” sequencing. If it is a “b” use all the “b” sequencing and so-forth. sequencing.

Hope this helps. Tom

Valves Opened - Adjust these

a) 4X – 1N= 3X- 3N- 8N- 6N- 7X- 2X

b) 8X – 5N= 1X- 7N- 6N- 7X- 3N- 2X

c) 6X – 4N= 5X- 2N- 1X- 7N- 3N- 2X

a) 3X – 8N= 1X- 7N- 5X- 2N- 4X- 1N

b) 6N – 7X = 5X- 2N- 4X- 1N- 8X- 5N

c) 3N – 2X= 4X- 1N- 8X- 5N- 6X- 4N

a) 1X – 7N = 8X- 5N- 6X- 4N

b) 5X – 2N= 6X- 4N- 3X- 8N

c) 4X – 1N= 3X- 8N- 6N- 7X

Re: Adjusting valves

I just bring #1 to top dead center after compression stroke and adjust both valves. Then rotate 90 degrees and adjust #5 and follow that through the entire firing order. So far, it has worked well for the last 53 years so I guess I will continue the same way. I first do this with the heads off and crank pulley attached. I then make marks every 90 degrees with paint so that I can refer to the marks should I have to readjust valves when the engine is all assembled and in the car.

Re: Adjusting valves

Seeing as how you have it on an engine stand you could just do it one cylinder at a time.
Set INTAKE when same cylinder's EXHAUST starts to open.
Set EXHAUST when same cylinder's INTAKE just closes

Another method is to get the valve opened to maximum lift and then rotate the crankshaft exactly one turn. That places the lifter on the heel of the cam.

I place a note with these instructions written on it next to where I am working so I don't get the cart before the horse. The older I get the more of these notes I have laying around. You will get it going and find out how quickly it actually goes.

I'm with you Ron, a lot of these other methods seem overly complicated to me!
