Leaking Gas Cap,... Help
 

I have a 1935 Ford 1 1/2 ton pick-up with a fuel tank under the seat. The gas cap leaks when the tank is 1/2 full or more when turning left. I've tried homemade new gaskets for the cap with limited success. Has anyone else had this problem and what's a good remedy? Who sells new caps or cap gaskets? Any tricks out there to try?

This was last year of the air type gas gauge, and if the setup is like 1932 the tank is vented through the sender unit at bottom of tank, with an unvented cap up top. I don't have a proper parts book here to check on that...
If that's the way this is set up the cap is meant to seal...you may have the later '36-48 cap with vent hole. Most types can be sealed up with a drop of solder if that's the case.

The tank has a hydrostatic sender with a vent, so the cap does not need to vent the tank. There is no vent hole in the cap, fuel is leaking through where the gasket seals against the neck. The sealing surface on the neck does not appear to have any irregularities, and the cap is tight.

I believe the original seal was a hard leather. Most of the original caps did NOT have Ford script. If your cap is the later style it may have a vent hole that is not visible.

Hi Everyone, Fordman, I've noticed on my 1936 Phaeton that fuel will come out the filler when I make a right turn with fuel more than half full (filler on driver/left rear tail light).

I've also seen three cars with full gas tanks on show fields, with heating/expanding fuel, and it was spilling on meticulously painted fenders.

Moral to story, I fill the tank with about five to six gallons. Frequently. If I need a full tank I try to be real gentle until I burn it down to below 3/4.

Not sure this is a great idea, because having a fuller tank means less air on the sidewalls, so less chance for rust buildup?!?

My 33 did spill gas,until I put the proper non vented cap on,the only place I think has them is sacramento vintage ford,
