Horn ring removal instructions 1941 super Deluxe

Hope this gets in , my second try. How do I remove the horn ring on steering wheel without damaging it? I need to check if something is making horn short out. Also, does anyone know of written instructions to replace the horn wire in case necessary? Appreciate any help. John

I tie a string onto the lower end of the horn wire. then if wire gas too be replaced attach the string to the new wire and pull thru. May have to push the horn ring center kind of hard, turn CCW to remove.

Thank you ford41, I assumed to get it through I would tie something and pull through but didn't know if it was that easy. What about the bottom, when I dissemble it , what does that contain and what do I replace? I had a model a but this I assume is way different. John

Here are some photos/diagrams of the lower end. The lighting switch is very similar for all these early years including the Model A. The wiring photos attached are Model A. The spring lug in the center is the horn contact.

Depending on the year there are differences but they are all similar. Here are some typical examples of the steering wheel end.

Hello JSeery, thks for pics, the 1941 is different I took apart today has spring about 3 inches long, wire looks new so I'm thinking problem is up in horn button area , still working on some insulator parts were hand cut but I ha be original l . Tomorrow will try and resolve john

Re: Horn ring removal instructions 1941 super Deluxe

That's exactly what my insides look like. However I need to know how and what parts go in this horn ring. I put a new insulator around the horn ring the end there's a wire that assembles to the ring coming from steering column, then the spring fits inside that large hole in center with other end of spring onto steering wheel. Horn works if you press one side or bottom due to the new insulator that goes around inside that outer cavalry in horn ring. Horn will blow then it gets blowing continuously. Should the spring be insulated on each end so it doesn't make contact with any metal? I don't think is the wire as it looks new, could it be relay? How to test relay!.? John

The relay could be sticking. Might try disconnecting the ground wire to the relay. Then connect the battery and see if the horn blows with the ground wire (the wire to the steering column) disconnected. If it does not then try touching the ground wire to the relay post and see if that activates the horn.

In your first photo(not drawing) the "upper" of the light switch, with the 4 contacts is for an early 28 A too a few months into 29. Let me know if you
need more information..

Just posted the photos to provide a vague idea of what the inside of the light controls look like. There are differences for different year (obviously) but at the same time they are all somewhat similar.

Thanks for the input Dudley, I am not very familiar with Model A parts, the last one I owned was in the mid-50s and didn't own it very long. Ended up trading it for a 46 Ford coupe and a 34 Plymouth coupe body.
