Axle housing grease fittings...

Do the grease fittings out at the end of the axle housings get grease into the hub bearings? If so, do they do it well?

Not really.

This is the definitive article:

Thanks T Bird. It seemed to me that if they were intended to grease the wheel bearings, the only way something like that would work was if the old grease had a way out as the new grease was pumped in and that the egress was at the opposite side of the bearing from the ingress.

Sometimes those fittings work to well. Things can get greased that shouldn't.

I prefer to remove, clean and pack the bearings every once in awhile.

On later Fords, the hole was plugged. That tells me it wasn't a GOOD IDEA !

Ford's early hydraulic brake systems had a metal "cup" that apparently was to catch excess grease that was injected, before it could get onto the linings, etc.

The path the grease has to take to get to the wheel bearing is: into the housing, out toward the axle taper, into the gap between the housing and axel, out into the hub- lots of twists and turns. It's more likely that the grease will take the path of least resistance and just shoot past the grease seal in the housing and fill up the trumpet. You gotta pull that hub and clean and pack the bearing periodically.

now this is a new one on me I incorrectly assumed that the bearings got oil from the diff. ive yet to grease them, or ever remove the hubs to inspect them, as I haven't got a puller. guess I better get one

You should hunt around for the model a grease./oil chart.
