78 case ID
 

I believe the case on the right is the heavy duty 78 case used in the pick up truck. It has a thicker bottom as can be seen where the reveal is just below the oil drain plug. The one on the left doesn't have that reveal but it does have an extension of the raised strip past the oil drain plug all the way to the rear of the transmission. The one on the right this raised strip stops at the oil drain plug.

Am I right??? Thank you.They are both marked 78's. I have another one that looks just like the one on the right but it doesn't have any screw holes tapped in it for the inspection plate/vent on the top of the bellhousing??? NOS???

the full length bottom rib is a pickup case, supposed to be stronger but never proven to be wives tail or not. go to van pelts wonderful web sight for ID of most ford parts

Thanks...I had it ass backwards. Van Pelts is in my bookmarks and I forget about them. Sorry Mac...I will be calling you for some trans parts I need.

I have often pondered just who invents these tales and my God, just who the heck believes them???

Ford did not install a unique case in the pick up trucks.

There were however, running design changes and as such, some vehicles got one type case and others another type case. Also, different foundries may very well have produced slight variations of the "same" case.

The floor shift case molds were redesigned starting in 1940 (with probably some short term carry-over} and continued thru 1952. The bottom rib disappeared and the area around the cluster was enlarged. The prefix remained "78" but different letter suffixes were added. Whether they were stronger?? Who knows but they were a little different and it makes them a little easier to assemble and dis-assemble. How do I know?? Let's just say from practical experience with a lot of old Fords and parts.

My biggest pet peeve is stating 41-42 engine blocks have a "raised intake manifold surface". "THERE IS NOTHING RAISED WITH THESE BLOCKS ONLY SOME METAL VOIDED AROUND THAT AREA".
