Help with Big Truck hubs and brakes I am hoping that someone can steer me toward some information on how to remove and reinstall/service/torque the wheel hub/brake drum assemblies on my 1935 Ford 1-1/2 ton truck.
It has full floating rear axles. I am mostly interested in the rear. I have a stuck rear brake, but have never had anything apart, so I want to remove the hubs for inspection and service. Any help would be appreciated. |
Re: Help with Big Truck hubs and brakes I can't help but I'll be following along.

Re: Help with Big Truck hubs and brakes To start...take out the small bolts and their centering cones and hardware from ends of axles.
To start axles moving, 2 of the holes in axle end are threaded and running a bolt into each will force axle to start moving on out. With axle out, a big nut is exposed--you should but probably don't have a big socket worked with the original tire iron in your OEM tool kit found under the front seat. Anyway, the nut captures the bearings just like the nut on front spindles does. Remove it and a hatfull of washers and bearings and hub should be ready to come off. Except for that brake problem. |
Re: Help with Big Truck hubs and brakes Thank you, Bruce.
I am fortunate, my truck was pretty complete, and does have the original tools, even that big socket! There are two yellow painted bolts, partly threaded into the axle end, at opposite sides, held by a nut. I looks like somebody left me some axle loosening bolts. I should have asked on the original thread - do the aftermarket `floating brake adjuster' kits work on the big trucks? |
Re: Help with Big Truck hubs and brakes NO-- they only fit cars..... I have a 1937 1 1/2 ton Dump as well as 1934 pickup. Those yellow colored painted bolts may have holes and that is how the rear hub caps are attached to the hub.
