NLGI 00 grease in steering box
 

I have read this from several sources, that a NLGI "self leveling" grease would work well for this application. IE: Will not push off of the surfaces that are intended to be lubed, and will resettle into the gears whenever you stop driving. It also stops the dripping of course, since it is not liquid.

However.... The only way I can seem to find this stuff packaged is in 5+ gallon containers, that start in the $80 range. I will NEVER use that much of this stuff with the time I have left on this earth, lol. I need about a pint at the most to take up the open space in the steering box.

Does anyone know where I can get this stuff in a grease gun tube, or in a small tub?:confused:

I use John Deere corn grease. Many threads on here regarding how it works as well as a John Deere video online. Works great but best of all no leaks.

They sell it by the grease gun tube for about 4 bucks

I am hitting an auto parts after work, that is a division of Arnold Oil Co. I am going to see if they have, there is also a tractor sales place not too far away. I will get some, and probably get it on my hands at some point. I have a friend who is a diesel mechanic, who has offered to do the rebuild for free, so I am trying to get the box out by Saturday night, so I can deliver to him when I see him Sunday. He will break it open, and find out if I need anything other than the normal bearings etc. I will try to get a hold of some of this seemingly hard to find grease before the reassembly. He was the one who originally told me about using grease instead of heavy oil, but he never told me about the self leveling stuff. Maybe it's what he was going to put in it anyway, but...

It probably needs it all, since the adjuster screw is all the way in until it stops, sigh...

Bought 2 tubes at a local John Deere dealer, even though this dealer sells mostly riding lawn mowers and chain saws.

Yes - use the John Deere Corn Head grease - then put it in a grease gun and stick the little end in the steering box and fill away - works great. Just filled my 32 box with it last week.

I also use John Deere Corn Head Grease in my steering box, universal joint, and water pumps on my '35 fordor. I have only been able to find this at JD dealers and online at their website. My steering box was a real bad leaker, and JDCHG solved that problem until if or when I decide to rebuild the box.

I purchased the 00 in quarts, mail order. I can not supply the source at this time. I use it in the U-joint. I use 140W in the steering. Note the Ford Spec. call for EP type (extreme pressure) lube in the steering.

You can get cornhead grease from the local John Deere dealer for less than $4. Comes in a regular grease tube. I tried Tractor Supply Company in my area and they did not have it. They referred me to the JD dealer down the road from them.

JD cornhead grease is NLGI # 0, perfect for the steering box.

You might be able to find a big truck repair facility that will sell you a pint of the ep00.
We use in in the auto greasers in all the big trucks we service.

I have seen in other post in the past where they say STP also works good to stop leaks.

Thixotropic polyurea grease is good stuff. I can't say about other greases without comparison.

I have not tried the JD corn head grease in a steering box but sounds like a good option. I've used it in a transaxle on a JD lawn tractor that I had rebuilt several years ago and put a lot of trouble free hours on the tractor since then.

I tried stp leaked out - use John Deere corn head grease and never had a drop leak

PennRite Steering box lube, no leaky. Available from Restoration Specialties, Escondido, CA. They have an on-line catalog. FWIW
