OT-Calling all Aussies I have some coworkers going to Australia next week on a cultural exchange. They are asking what they should bring from California or the states that you all would like to have. Any ideas?

Re: OT-Calling all Aussies Money??

Re: OT-Calling all Aussies Your chocolates are pretty good, but might not survive the trip tho.
Are California wines any good? We don't see much of them. Just keep in mind our customs laws are fairly strict. You don't want to end up like Johnny Depp and have an altercation with our agricultural minister. |

If you were expecting guests to turn up in the Australian meaning and they thought that you meant the British definition you'd be in for a shock. Your flip might flop. |

Re: OT-Calling all Aussies I am sure there is a joke in there somewhere but I did not intentionally make one. Our guys just want to know what we should bring down there as guests. Things that you all don't get/can't get there basically. Not sure if your thing meaning is the same one as ours. But if it is, not sure I want to see that. So far California wine and chocolate are on the list of can do items.

Re: OT-Calling all Aussies Mike,
GOOLGE Aussie customs regulations. I would not take any food stuff, they are very strict. |
Re: OT-Calling all Aussies Don't take black licorice as they have the best soft, black licorice in the world. Wayne
If alcohol is permitted you can never go wrong with a bottle of nice wine. They like semi sweet! |
Re: OT-Calling all Aussies Australia is one hell of a size. So I guess in terms of clothing etc - depends on where they will be "culturally exchanging"!

Thong British style - very brief underwear Thong American style - ??? |
Re: OT-Calling all Aussies Thong American style = not enough to call underwear, more like a jock strap for the ladies.

Re: OT-Calling all Aussies On customs regulation, yes, they are strict but fairly logical. We are an island and we are trying to keep out weird bugs and creatures. (we have enough of those already)
Usually, processed food like chocolates and wine are OK. Heck, you can buy them in every airport. However, things like fruit, some weird sausage etc. will be confiscated due to the threat from bugs. Wood items that are clean and have preferably been kiln dried should be OK if you declare it. If it is from Borneo, for example, with the bark on it and it might have bugs in it, it will not pass. Camping gear and boots with soil on it will not pass either. Johnny Depp should have declared his dogs on his private jet. They would have needed to go thru quarantine which takes time. Often it is quicker to declare something than nothing on entry. If you do the right thing and declare it you should find customs helpful. Airport security is another matter. Bottles of wine you will need to check on. Also, you may need to transit through countries that don't allow alcohol. There will also be a duty free limit. If we want a reminder of somewhere we've been we usually buy a set of drink coasters. Find something bright and cheerful. Maybe in this case a Californian surfing or sporting theme. They are small and easy to carry and are always useful. |
