Orginial wheels [30/31's] thinking about it?

The Open FORDS by Lorin Sorensen shows a very nice clear picture of a warehouse in Long Beach [Calif.] second floor of parts ,parts and more parts [A football field size filled of parts]. A pile of thousand's of wheels. I have come across a few orginial "A's" along with my 180A that had both Hamilton and Kelsey-Hayes on from birth. I know the Judging Standards state all rims must match but i don't see it that way [sorry] .I have come in contact with another 180A which is one of the nicest Model "A' i ever seen.SOLID ,STRAIGHT and less the 8,000 orginial miles i would say.Being restored as i type. All orginial interior ,mint nuts, bolts and lockwashers [ NO RUST] NONE.This car never left the neighborhood [a 2 owner car ] from new till 1955. Here is the deal ...ALL rims with matching orginial paint[as mine] and has both Hamilton and Kelsey-Hayes wheels. Anyone else out there with the same on orginial unrestored cars. ..I am upto 5 cars. I just can not see anyone on the line taking note on rim difference. thanks....:p

Hard to tell today, but do you think right side got one brand and the left side got the other? I agree the guy on the line wouldn't notice, much less care. How many wheels did Joe Adverage bolt on in a day at the Ford factory?

Re: Orginial wheels [30/31's] thinking about it?

When these A's were rolling down the assembly line, nobody was looking for, much less cared, if the rims were all matching or not. Same with so many other items all over the cars. The pinstripers sure didn't make a big effort to match how the guy on the other side was striping, they just met in the middle and went on to the next car. Did all of the head studs rise above the head nuts just so from the assembly line, as called for in the Standards? Of course not. This list could go on, and on, and on, and on, just like the Energizer Bunny.

So?

From a whole string of posts months ago, the reasons the Judging Standards were written that way is, because they are a set of "standards" to be used during judging. Pretty simple.

 Well , this is what i tried to explain to the owner of a "MINT" low mileage ,complete orginial ,2 owner car , that you can drive a New Model "A" out of a Ford dealership and NOT meet "their" [JS] standards. And he wants to be judged for fine point at a MARC meet in Wisc...This car is so nice the doors you can pass as N.O.S. and the top iron.I truly think this 180A never see rain or got wet. I thought he bought a N.O.S. radiator shell and emblem from someone , that's how nice the parts are on this car. I am like a dog in heat ...l.o.l.:p:eek:

Roadster62 , you know of the restoration shop on rt 17.... And i know you must know the owner of the shop? A Big "Packard" restoration man in REDDING Conn... I might be going back on Monday morning to check in and see how things are going.:o The car NEVER left Redding Conn. owned by a little old lady story and her brother is still alive at 90+.

To Peters 180A.

For judging purposes it looks like you and your friend with the phaeton need to exchange two wheels to both have matching sets :>)

Roadster62 , Your 180A Picture looks to be the same car. Somewhere in late 50's it had a repaint [not a body off]. The picture shows how nice the sheet metal was in 64. I'll ask the owner tomorrow ...GLENN CA. You are right about [Packard restorer] restoring a Model "A'. [I take that as you do "mistake"]as far as doing "A" for fine point judging.Paint is super and even the frame is NOT glossy. Richard CA, I found wheels to make all his match ...He had 3 of each. [ so he is set with Hamilton's] and i found 2 mint Kelsey-Hayes wheels at Hershey for mine. So both cars are set. I don't think the top was put down to much. The top iron's are tight and has orginial side certain rods ,top saddles rest and rods.I gotta check what he has for tools?

Sometimes we forget that the Judging Standards reflect the car that Ford wanted to leave the factory not what actually left the factory.

I feel that is the reason it takes so long to see change in the Standards. The committee want to be sure that what is presented was an everyday occurrence or just an anomaly?

If your friend is certain the wheels on the car are what came from the factory when the car was new, and your friend is determined to participate in fine point judging, why doesn't he apply for a variance?

Re: Orginial wheels [30/31's] thinking about it?

Blessyouboys ., I have tried that myself with a pop-out switch before French Lick. I wrote to the Chief Judge about my pop-out being a Mid 1930 [ with late 1928 - mid 1930 KEYS-]. At a point this pop-out is correct for about 4 months which my Aug 1930 should have it. ALL guy's agree who are the who's who in the pop-out world will agree. So not to start trouble until it is in print in the JS. they said to stay with what the JS has listed. So now over the winter i will replace with the correct pop-out not yet in print.

Marshall Lewis, past President of MAFCA, who has a very late Victoria, lost some points in Blue Ribbon Judging at the MAFCA National Meet in Reno, didn't have matching wheels.
