How to replace king pins - '39 Ford When I've removed retaining bolt from the axle, do the pins require force (a press) to remove? What's best way to remove pins and bushings?

Re: How to replace king pins - '39 Ford They shouldn't require a lot of force to remove them, but if the vehicle has been particularly poorly maintained they might be a bit tight and need some persuasion. Needless to say you need to remove hub and brake backplate first.
A short brass drift and a heavy hammer should move them. you're knocking upwards so it isn't ideal. Make sure the axle is well supported on good quality stands. I say heavy hammer because you will not have much swing below the axle. Heavy hammer but use it softly, if you get my drift (pun intended). If the axle is off the vehicle it is a big advantage to knock them out downwards with the axle upside down. The force being directed towards the ground and the axle well supported makes a big difference. Some good penetrating oil applied around the axle boss and the pin can do nothing but help. Mart. |

Re: How to replace king pins - '39 Ford I agree with RalphM. I use a torch to heat the king pin boss in the axle and an air hammer to drive them out. They can be REALLY stubborn. If it was a running driving car and maintained they should come out easy. But if it's sat out in the dirt they can get extremely tight

Re: How to replace king pins - '39 Ford with the backing plate removed You could jack it up high then lower the king pin with a stepped drift stuck in the bottom of the KP onto some sturdy axl stands .strike down on the axle with a big sledge with wood 2x4 ,and the combined weight of the car will drive it up .Ted

Re: How to replace king pins - '39 Ford I did one recently and was pleasantly surprised when hitting the king lightly from the bottom it moved ,I was about to take the axle out .It took me 3to 4 hours to re bush ,ream and replace .the biggest hassle was the cotter key was going almost through so I used the old one .Ted

Re: How to replace king pins - '39 Ford If you decide on my previous suggestion ,one more ingredient has to be included ,common sense, if you use a drift a large washer could be welded to the drift then with top of the Axle stand removed place the drift in the top of the remaining stand.Ted
