Tiny Tach problems

I recently purchased 2 Tiny Tachs , one for my A and another for my flathead v8 . Does the pick up wire normally wrap around the coil wire or a plug wire. On the A , l put it on no4 plug wire and it showed 120 rpm at idle , moved it to coil wire and it increased to 480 - 490 rpm. The one on the v8 started out ok then locked up reading 533. I have emailed the supplier but after a week still no reply.

The instructions say spark plug wire.

Re: Tiny Tach problems

I had a Tiny Tach mounted in my S/W Fordor (sold the car). The pickup wire was wrapped around the coil wire. Wrapping around the spark plug wire gave me the wrong reading.

The number of wraps around the coil wire affects the number of rpm's displayed.

Re: Tiny Tach problems

All of the induction reading tachs I've installed read the impulses of one cylinder so the pickup was wrapped around one spark plug wire but as Mike V intimated, follow the manufacturers instructions.

Why not get a real tach? Special ordered this from Classic Instruments and it's made in the USA!

How did you mount it? Also, what model is it, I only see 6000 rpm tachs on their site?

Classic Instruments has a special order department and you can specify RPM range, 6v or 12v, needle design and face. It's a 3-3/8" tach mounted in a CI cup on the steering column.
