Transmisson oil leak fix

In order to reduce oil leaks, we installed new main shaft bearings (sealed on both sides) along with both the shaft seal kits. I don’t know how it worked as 55 miles later the clutch went out, so the motor is back out again.

Since he did my transmission, my mechanic had a problem on a similar job because of oil leaking out the front of the main drive gear bearing retainer. That customer was using light oil.

He said a cure would be to remove drive gear bearing retainer and plug a drain hole (in the case?) with a wooden dowel. The hole may be there to return the oil that originally went through the non- sealed bearings.

What are your opinions on plugging this hole? I will be using original type 600 oil.

Depending on the outside diameter bearing fit to the case, you will get some oil leak there. I am not saying that this is correct in your case, but many people think they have installed sealed bearings, when in reality the bearings they installed were shielded bearings. I would have also removed the seals for both bearings on the inside. I myself would not plug that hole. If the input shaft bearing retainer is installed properly, that hole is a drain back hole into the transmission.

Glenn,

I am thinking also that I will not plug the hole. It seems to me that having the drain hole open would be a safety factor to prevent leaks in case some oil did get by the bearings. I can't see where the hole would be a problem unless the transmission was overfilled. Am I missing something?
Thanks,

I would think now you have stopped all means of pressure build up in the transmission that the factory vent hole is plugged solid, it is located in the shift tower about 2-3 inches down from the shift lever facing rearwards, use a drill to wind out the hardened junk, don't plug up a hole that was designed to drain oil back into the transmission, it would make things worse.

Brian,
after reading your post, I did check the hole in the shift tower and it was clear.
