New water outlet neck installed '29 Tudor, '30 engine with the longer (higher) water outlet neck.
I bought a shorter water neck for appearance sake to get rid of the crooked hose. Here's how the install went: Drained all coolant from engine. Removed long water neck. Trued the flange of the new neck with abrasive paper on plate glass. Cleaned the mounting surface on the head as best I could w/o removing the studs. Installed neck with new, dry copper gasket. Torqued nuts, without washers, in 5ft/lb increments up to 55 ft/lb. Filled coolant. Leak. Well, more like a slow, slow seep at the copper gasket (head side) on the back side. It took over night to see a small spot of coolant on the head. Second attempt. Clean, bare surfaces with Loctite 587 Blue RTV silicone. Wait 24 hrs. Fill with coolant. No leaks! I recommend method two. |
Re: New water outlet neck installed good job!
You will find permatex ultra black to be far superior to the blue versions of RTV just for future reference. We tossed all our blue RTV products a while back |
