Bubbas hacked !!!!!!

Had a pretty bad hack job this morning on a email recieved etc. Got a email from a so called Co Court asking me to appear in court April 22 and to brinjg info with me. There was a attached file for more info. Opened the file and the computer came up with a message saying i had to pay xxxxxx in bit coins to ever open this computer again. I have had three computer guys look at it today .and they all say either pay them or junk the computer....ie new hard drive etc.

I have decided not to pay the randsom and will pick it up on another seperate computer in a few days.

So bear with me and i will catch up with the emails from home etc....

I have heard of these. People really have no choice, they have to pay or get a new computer. Isn't technology grand.

The hackers are probably computer manufacturers......
That's bad luck Jim.

Thank you for the heads up on this one.

Yes, thanks for the heads up! Sorry you got hit. What is it with these people!
I've had a few shots like that and I froze! Sure didn't want to touch the darn thing. Anyways, I did a three finger shift and opened the "task manager" once that opened, I selected the offending webpage and hit "END" task. It's worked for me on some of those nasty sites that you just don't want to touch!

That is the reason I try to back my hard drive up every couple of weeks. I can wipe my infected hard drive out completely, then reboot it with the backup. Everything comes back just like it was at last backup. No need to re-install anything. Some of the crooks must have nothing to do.

Re: Bubbas hacked !!!!!!

I have eight computers and only one connects to the internet. Every morning I delete all emails that are from senders I don't know and never open them.

Kaspersky warns me when I click on websites. Haven't backed up my hard disk yet only because I don't have the kind of disc needed. Have an external hard drive that I could use, but not sure if my internet connected one is disease free.

Someday we'll be musing over the days when we could communicate freely over the net unmolested.

Friend of mine has a removable hard drive he swaps in just for internet use.

Thanks for the reminder and heads up.

Never open attachments to any suspicious looking email - just asking for trouble.

Why can't a hard drive be formatted after the hack ?

Sounds like a trick question. OK, I'll bite. Why can't a hard drive be formatted after the hack? 8^)

Being older than dirt and with a spotty memory, I'm enrolled in Carbonite.com and they do an automatic backup of my computer every few minutes. Relatively inexpensive (about $4/month). My files are on their servers and available 24/7. I think it's a pretty good value. Your results may vary. dw

Re: Bubbas hacked !!!!!!

I have had a similar experience and after googling on another computer for the answer I was able to reset the computer to a version of itself that pre-dated the hack by a couple days. I lost several days of memory but that was all. I recall having to push a button (f8?) during the initial boot-up and that took me to a screen with prompts that allowed me to restore the earlier version. Maybe give that a try, otherwise I suggest a raffle for entertaining ways for your computer to die, the winning suggestion is videotaped and posted so we can live vicariously.

i've had that screen to but i never had to scrap my computer, Not saying it cant happen but I did get mine back under my control with the help of a computer wiz close to me. My message told me to go to Walgreen's get a prepaid debit card to make payment.

Best advice I ever got was to NEVER open a link in an email. Even from a family member. You don't know if they have been hacked.

If you are feeling brave, or have a machine you don't care about, read the link carefully. Bad ones usually read funny.

Re: Bubbas hacked !!!!!!

I would suggest getting familiar with "System Restore" that comes with Windows. I have not had a chance to use to with Windows 10, but have used it to get back from problems like this several times on Windows 8 with success every time. You have to "catch" the system early in the "boot" procedure (usually by hitting the "F2" key early on in the boot process) and get control of the system. My computer would default to some strange screen settings, but they were always usable enough to get "System Restore" running. Once it gets going, you can select a "restore point" before the problems started. (Windows sets these "Restore Points" automatically after every major system change.) It only restores the operating system and programs, so all your data should be preserved.

I am no longer a "computer guru" like I was 40 years ago, so all I can do is point you down the path that worked for me. It took a lot of screwing around and trial and error, but I finally figured out how to use it. About two years ago, Microsoft finally got their "Security Essentials" package up to snuff, and I haven't had a problem since. If I ever see anything the least bit odd, I start a "Quick Scan" with "Security Essentials" just to be sure.

EDIT : I think "System Restore" is what "SofaKing" was referring to in his post 15.

Anyone using WordPress for webpage development is vulnerable. I would suggest changing password on any website developed with WordPress. Dave/Green Bay

Formating was a option that my computer guy didnt wish to do as there was some fear as to the attack happening agin. This computer wont be used again and i lost quite a bit in pictures etc and some documents. Not really anything i can redo over time. The business software is on a seperate computer and very well a backed up , thats the good news......
