Re: new headliner 1946 mercury Looks very nice. It wouldn't be difficult to remove that side panel under the quarter window and stretch out those wrinkles.

Re: new headliner 1946 mercury Lebaron Bonney does a lot for Ford cars but they don't do much for the Mercury cars. Headliners can be more complicated to make than a seat cover so they take time. Many folks that do auto trim for a living will purchase a headliner rather than make it themselves since they can't do it as cheep as the ones that are available. I do the same thing as long as the ones available are good quality. If there are none available a person has no choice. The OEM type materials available are limited too so a trimmer doesn't have much choice unless the customer wants a custom job and for that the sky and especially the pocket book are the only limits.
Vinyl is heavy and it doesn't stretch well so it is much more difficult to do headliners with. One of my Mercury cars had a vinyl headliner when I purchased it but all the thread was failing so it came apart at the seams. I don't think it can take heat as well as the cotton cloth does so it can shrink in excessive heat and put a heavy strain on the thread. I would use the heaviest thread available to do a vinyl headliner |
