Speedster Project Well, I got a bit more done this last weekend. Not as much as I had hoped, but still plenty.
Saturday morning I went down and helped cut the nuts off a frog. That's railroad speak I guess for part of the rail switching mechanism. I volunteer down at the Abilene and Smokey Valley Railroad, and we were laying another track and switch to the barn. http://salinafyi.media.clients.ellin...08e3fa67d9af9d Back home I started to put the chassis together. https://www.t-mobilepictures.com/mya...474061000.jpeg Sunday morning I rolled it into the shop to clean up the frame rails some: https://www.t-mobilepictures.com/mya...618645000.jpeg Then my little helper and I set the motor in: https://www.t-mobilepictures.com/mya...618799000.jpeg I still need to move the front crossmember ahead a scosh and get a set of rear u-bolts. https://www.t-mobilepictures.com/mya...618865000.jpeg That's all for now. |
Re: Speedster Project Looks good, your making some fast progress...brakes and everything.
Good feeling to have helper, definite bonding moment. I think it would be hard to know where to spend my time, car or the train. Maybe a train race? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cIB6b...eature=channel Keep up the good work. |
Re: Speedster Project neat, jay. really neat.

Re: Speedster Project wow.
91 views and only 2 comments from my close friends. no love on the fordbarn for me. |
Re: Speedster Project What do you have in mind for a body?
|
Re: Speedster Project LOL I'm still drooling over that steam engine. I think you should design a steam engine body to go on your frame! You could have the best of both worlds!
|
Re: Speedster Project Jay... I think your setting us up for a surprise, a riveted body from railroad boilerplate? Or building one of those Ford powered rail service car.

Maybe something like this:

Re: Speedster Project Nice locomotive. My Dad's currently restoring a 1928 Pullman car. Back in the 1930's both of my Grandfathers worked in a N & W owned coal mine. They were good friends and they worked in different sections back in the handloading days. They had to lay their own track to their section. They could only get 6 inch frog bolts to bolt the track together which was hard to do being so short. Eight inch frog bolts were a luxury. My paternal GF sent my maternal GF a bag of 8" bolts that he had hidden in the mine, thoroughly upsetting his own brother in law and cementing a friendship that lasted a lifetime.

Re: Speedster Project What goodies are you planning on for the motor? -YB

Re: Speedster Project Feel the love, 90 people are interested and I am sure would like you to keep posting and show photos of your progress.. The quality time between you and your helper is something to cherish as it can not be bought at any price, from your avatar her face says it all! From your sketch the rear looks like a pickup box? I like the concept of an "open cab" pickup...do you plan any engine mods or just a light weight speedster... Make sure your seat can adjust so a certain helper's legs can reach the pedals!!! Kool start, keep updates coming most people will not respond unless they have something to say , that has never stopped me or a politician! My dad always said " the way to tell if a canidate is lying, is to see if his lips are moving" LOL

Re: Speedster Project brakes are a good thing :D. The seat looks comfortable. Does it have a muffler or straight pipe? headers?

Re: Speedster Project :) Its like a really fun project. Have a great time with your helper!

Re: Speedster Project This past weekend I made a go at building a speedster seat. I wanted a bench style so I could squeeze a third person in front if needed. All week I pored over pics of vintage style speedster seats. I did some measuring and drew up a plan in cadd, and then plotted it 1:1 scale.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...g?t=1290436299 I had a sheet of 1/2" plywood left over from some other project. https://www.t-mobilepictures.com/mya...0277786000.jpg Next, for the back, I had this old bent up round bale feeder in my scrap pile. https://www.t-mobilepictures.com/mya...279853000.jpeg The sheet bottom was 16" and heavy enough gauge to work. Here it is attached to the seat bottom: https://www.t-mobilepictures.com/mya...0282189000.jpg Next I drew out the curves to trim it and cut one side. Then I used the scrap piece to transfer to the other side so they would be somewhat similar. Then I found a few pieces of nice thick welding rod to use as a edge. I clamped it and tacked that on. https://www.t-mobilepictures.com/mya...0285501000.jpg Here it is: https://www.t-mobilepictures.com/mya...293239000.jpeg "Dad!! can I try!!" https://www.t-mobilepictures.com/mya...290211000.jpeg "I wanna drive!!" https://www.t-mobilepictures.com/mya...0290349000.jpg Well- that was Saturday. Yesterday I started on the wooden pickup bed. https://www.t-mobilepictures.com/mya...359914000.jpeg Side: https://www.t-mobilepictures.com/mya...373678000.jpeg I need to buy some bolts today. |
Re: Speedster Project Looks great and the helpers are happy all anyone could ask for.
|
