chevy valves in flathead

put chevy valves in 24 stud flathead and they are loud, was wondering if others have had this problem. Lot of clickiing going on and adjustments have been rechecked. Thanks.

Yes we've been doing this for years, especially when using a cam with a small base circle.

Are they hitting the heads?

Re: chevy valves in flathead

There is no reason for them to be any louder than any other valve - unless there is too much lash or they are hitting the heads. I can't hear mine in my latest engine . . . well, I can't hear anything in my latest engine . . . as it is uncorked to date! :)

Found that I had to hold the heads as far up towards the intake as possible before tightening the heads down. This eliminated the problem of the valves contacting the heads. With no locating dowels, the heads can be moved somewhat with all the studs in before tightening down.

I am assuming you are using 1949-53 Ford valve springs. If so, did you shim the valve springs? I believe the shim thickness is 0.060"

You aren't putting earlier (39-41) heads on a 59 series engine are you? If so the valve pockets in the heads need to be enlarged.

I would think that if the valves were hitting the heads they would be bent and leaking.

All depends on how much! But I agree with you, that is usually the net result!

It's awfull hard to tell this guy what his problem is when we don't what year engine is and what heads he,s using. Walt

Re: chevy valves in flathead

Thanks much for info Guys. Not sure of year of the block but both heads are 59ab. AS for the springs I installed new springs for the flatheads. Been awhile but shimmed at least .060. The spring and valve assy seemed a little loose compared to regular ford valves and springs, The valve stems had to be shaved a few thousand to allow room for adjustments. reading this,I can see where I would of been better off going ford valves any way thanks

Welcome back Walt.

Re: chevy valves in flathead

Lots more work when you use stock 59a valves and split guides..The spring shims have nothing to do with valves hitting the heads if that's what you are thinking.

Re: chevy valves in flathead

Is it possible the valves were adjusted without the cam being at its lowest point?
just a thought.,...jack
