Lincoln backing plates

I thought the real deal were pretty rare. These are cheap. What is wrong with these other than being rusty?

That's not just a little rust, that is sever pitting on the back side (painted side). They may be usable, but I wouldn't give half that for them. I'm really not sure what they would be good for. Don't think a restorer would want them and doubt a Hot Rodder would use them. Rat Rod is about it!!!

It's a gamble alright. I'll report back when I get them. Repros are $600!

Re: Lincoln backing plates

What were you going to use them on? Might be able to sand down the backside and fill the pits in and repaint them. The insides are not so bad looking. The adjustors look a little on the bad side, might be able to replace them. There is a lot of room for repairs between $80 and $600 I guess.

You sound a lot like me on this one! I am always finding something that looks like a total lost cause and repairing it!!!

I think the 39 Lincoln backing plates are the desirable ones. They have a deep offset where they bolt to the spindle.

ken, the `39 & `40 fronts are the preferred Lincoln backing plates for `32 -`36 spindles because they are a virtual bolt on [ bolt pattern and mounting bolt size are the same]. however the backing plates in question are rears, and Lincoln rear backing plates are the same from `39 - `48. i noticed the seller has the brake drums for sale in a separate auction, they are listed as having I.D.`s of 12.080 & 12.095. both brake drums are well beyond the legal limit of 12.060.

Oh no! Save your money and let someone else own those.

Take a better look at those "Lincoln" backing plates!! The adjusters are the cam type like Ford and the shoe anchors look like the 46 to 48 anchors. Lincoln shoes anchor at the top and have a star adjuster on the bottom.

mrtexas, I think you did good. They look plenty good for anything I drive. And, yes, they are Bendix - nothing like 46-48 Ford. Just opinion here.

The way I figure it is there is at least one good one with a new one costing $300. The rusty one can probably be saved. We shall see. Couldn't believe a set could sell so cheaply. I don't really need a set but they are cheap! In fact I'm selling off all my v8 brake levers, drums, and backing plates:

The Ford brakes are Lockheed, the Lincoln brakes are Bendix

Another set I am selling way cheaper. BTW what year Ford are these off of with 11 inch drums?

I bought/installed that M/T kit on my '30 roadster...dam pricey !
Texas...YOU did good and if I'd known more, back when, I'd have done same :) Experience is expensive to obtain, IMO.

But damn good as well. Can't ever be too good on brakes IMHO. I have a spare set of MT Model A backing plates for sale as well! Took them off my 28 to install back the mechanicals to sell the car. http://www.mtcarproducts.com/Brakes.html

I don't think the rust is a problem, that is fairly easy to deal with. It is the deep pitting on the back side that I would be concerned about. That and the adjusters, but like you say you will find out. Keep us posted.
