TH350 sounds like marbles ....

Had a rebuilt TH350 installed last June (less than 5k miles ago). No problems until yesterday coming home from 200 mile trip. About 30 miles from home, started hearing what sounded like "marbles" as it shifted into 2nd gear. First few times, the sound was very short, but as I continued to drive, it got louder and longer when in 2nd. No symptoms of slippage, and noise is only in 2nd gear. Checked fluid when I got home; a tad low, so I added fluid and drove around the block. Still sounds as bad as previously. Coincidently, my brake master shows slight sign of leakage, and pedal does not always return to full up position by itself. Any ideas?? Many thanks!!

It could be a number of things but from my past experience as a transmission repair shop owner I would suspect the following in order of probability, all would require transmission removal.

(1) rear planetary gear set failure.
(2) low roller clutch failure (locked in first freewheels in second)
(3) roller clutch failure in torque converter ( this is probably the least viable the noise would be coming from the front of the transmission and you would either not be able to pull away from a dead stop because the stator would be free wheeling or locked and then you would not be able to get to cruising speed " always multiplying torque")

In any case if you drop the pan you undoubtedly are going to see a lot of metal.

Fixed under warranty! Found broken sprag and bad pump. Trans was rebuilt last June and had a 12 mo/12k warranty.

My 1st car (Apr 1964) was a black '47 Ford tudor sedan (with a flat head). Two years ago, my wife "talked me into" buying a street rod. Within 2 weeks, I found a black '48 (year I was born) tudor sedan on eBay (Portland OR) built just the way I wanted. Bought it sight unseen; after LOTS of pics, phone calls to seller, and inspected by 3rd party garage. Have put almost 17k miles on it and enjoy EVERY mile driving it. I can attest that almost every hobby is expensive to acquire and maintain. I am a very fortunate and blessed man to have a great wife and a great life. My motto is: "So long as I wake up, the day has a good start!"
