Radiator upgrade.

Thinking about putting a new Radiator in my f1 (v8). still have the original one in there right now, took the cap off and the top holes/slits are packed with gunk.
so... if i buy new what should I be looking for? or... should I get the original one cleaned out if cost effective? any thoughts?

I bought one from Speedway for my panel, made a world of difference with a warm engine.

If your tanks are good, I would get it re-cored with a high efficiency copper core

I bought an F-1 radiator from LMC truck and it did worlds of wonder for my truck. Price was 200 less than re-coring mine.

Just went through this recently. Weighed the options and decided to re- core the one in my truck. Had a four row, brass core put in with new petcocks and overflow tube. I knew mine would fit after the work was done. Should have done it sooner. Nice, steady temp readings now, even under a load. Find a quality radiator shop and see what they say. Good luck.

The one from LMC fit just fine. The quality radiator shop wanted 700 to do mine. The truck is now in Japan, has been for the last 8 years and no issues with the radiator. Just my personal experience.

Whatever .... don't waste your money on a new aluminum radiator. Recently read a lab test report in a PU resto mag that said there's barely any difference in heat dissipation between copper vs. aluminum radiators.

Had one re-cored for my '49 last summer. Brass with copper fins, sand blasted all the metal and tanks, resoldered the inlets and outlets and painted. $550.00 Looked like new!

I just got an aluminum, polished one from Champion in Calif.. Love it. $185 with free shipping. Was here in four days (Arizona) Quality welds and workmanship, and the mounting holes lined up. My truck has the two top and two lower inlets/outlets. Dis a hundred mile cruise yesterday in 90 degree weather and ran at about 200 degrees. Did not use my a/c. http://www.championcooling.com/

I also got one for my F1 from LMC, it bolted in with no problems. the only thing I didn't like was the black paint job, top end was full of paint runs. other then that truck runs cool

Not sure I understand this comment, seems backward. An aluminum radiator is lighter and cheaper than a brass radiator. They do not cool quite as well, but the difference is not significant in most cases. So if you want to same money and don't care about originality, then consider aluminum.

do the stock fan shrouds fit on these aftermarkets? if so, which ones? thanks, jack

Re: Radiator upgrade.

Can't tell you if it will fit the "Champion". I run an elec fan and there was pleanty of flange area for me to fasten both the fan and my a/c condenser. I would give them a call and ask. Sure is a sweet product, and priced right. (See my above post for web site)

Re: Radiator upgrade.

I also used a champion, but I had a 302 and the stock shroud wouldn't work with the fan on the engine. I ran it like that for a while and later switched to electric.

Pretty happy with quality, fit, and finish of the aluminum radiator...very inexpensive and likely cheaper than a re-core.
