Electrolytic rust removal inside?
 

My shop is in my basement. Will my wife kick me out? (Does it stink up the house?).

I did my Cub Cadet wheel in the laundry tub. I don't recall any stink, but where the steel rods touched the fiberglass tub it left marks that took a lot of scrubbing to remove.

Gives off Hydrogen gas and Oxygen. An explosive mix that will accumulate indoors. Do it outside where there is a breeze to carry the gasses away.

There is no bad smell when doing electrolysis. Molasses is a totally another story, as far as smell - bad! I seriously doubt enough hydrogen gas is released to even come close to causing an explosion. I have heard this scare several times, but have never heard of an explosion doing electrolysis. I suppose if the conditions were just contrived enough, like an air tight room, a lot of rusted parts cooking and an open flame, maybe you could cause an explosion, but I doubt it. It is probably a good idea to have decent ventilation, i.e. a fan to disperse any hydrogen buildup when doing electrolysis inside. BTW, I do electrolysis outside because it is messy.

Many batteries have exploded and that is a reality. Here we have the same gasses and he is in a basement where there is likely limited ventilation. Rusty, I agree that it is messy.

Please clarify. Are you talking about rust as a result of electrolysis like flash rust or actually removing rust using electrolysis? I may have misunderstood.

I use pickling vinegar (higher acid than regular vinegar) submerse the rusted part for a few days in a plastic container, scrub the surface with a wire brush and rinse off with lots of water.

I know all the options for removing. My favorite is Evapo-rust. I want to give the charger and oxywash a try. I have a window in the basement shop and can set up the ventilation. Didn't want to set up the charger outside if I could help it.

I tried electrolytic, line of site ok, not so for interior of part I was working on. Then I tried Evaporust haven't gone back. Maybe I would use on a big part? Wish I could afford 30 gals of Evaporust in a 55 gal drum!

I used Evapo-Rust on some tools and I got a black residue on them. How do do you get rid of the residue? I am going to try to soak them in oil, or maybe MMO.

Clean with water then coat with clean Evaporust!
