Paint problem
 

Wouldd like to put the stripe on my Coup.

Do not know the width of it. Any posable help woul be appreciated.

Are you referring to pin-striping or some other kind of strip?

I thought the paint guide said 'officially' 1/8, in practice something closer to 3/32nd's.

If the stripe you are concerned with are pin-stripes, like Mike said above, Ford stated 1/16" wide. However, that appears a little to thin from what I have seen the last 6 or 7 years attending MARC meets when inspecting fine point cars, as well as some original unrestored cars. It seems to me most stripes are in the order of 3/32" wide. Personally I think the slightly wider stripes look better, as 1/16" can't be seen real well and just seems a little too narrow.

I had mine done by a local pro.We looked at a few examples and I turned him loose. Came out very well a bit shy of 1/8". You do want it to show up and too thin could be a problem. A lot depends on the reveal color the stripe goes on. Look at lots of examples before you decide. Unfortunately, my avatar was done before striping. But it is wheel color yellow/straw.

I had a strip put on that was too wide, looked terrible. In fact it looked so bad that I removed all of the striping after the complete car was done. Check the Judging standards for both width and placement (it is not as straightforward as you might assume) before you go to the striper.

You might want to go to an auto parts store or an auto paint supplier and buy a couple widths of pin striping tape for a few bucks... put it on a door or the hood to see what you like, and then have your striper duplicate it.

I personally think 1/8" is too wide and looks a bit "heavy". But it's your car, so enjoy it!

Get it done right by Jim Brand....he is not far from you and very reasonable

By the Judging Standards it's 3/32. Close to an 1/8 but not quite. Finer looks better for some reason.

I agree. 1/4" will be way too wide.
As other have said the 3/32" will look nice and Jim Brand is the guy for the job.

I used the Finese striping tape in 1/16 width on my 30 roadster . You paint in between the double lines of tape then peel off the tape. I was pleased with the way it came out.

Vermins' perfect striping is a light Grey, on a Lombard Blue body, BUT, it's nearly 1/4" wide & looks STUPID!
I'll have my Striper run a body color stripe in the middle of it & make it look like 2 stripes.
YES, I realize that High Points Guys will "cringe", but I think it will look better.

Ditto to what Barry stated in post 16. Finesse stencil tape is available in many styles and widths and with instructions. You can also buy the striping enamels on line or at many stores and mix to adjust color. Also, it's handy to have for touch ups. With practice, the tape can be adjusted for straightness prior to painting with a small brush (pin striping brushes hold a lot of paint). The tape can be a little tricky on very tight curves such as a gas tank on deluxe cars but can be adjusted as needed.
