CCs for Head Can anyone give the CC numbers for a stock original Winfield cast iron head comb chamber ? Same info needed for the reproduction aluminum head that sells as a 7:1. Thanks :)

Re: CCs for Head 7:1 should be about 125cc, according to a chart made by a friend of mine. Stock in the neighborhood of 250.

The one that I just CCd comes in at 'about' 125 to 130....so with shaky hands, we are in the 6.7:1 ballpark :D I used the method that you described in your book(4 Bangers and Me). The "Best" head gasket protrudes into the combustion chamber of my original crows foot head ever so slightly. |

I have 'slanted' alum style combustion chamber and cast iron 'crowfoot' style. I'm wondering origin of who/date made these two styles. I am aware that Winfield said that cast iron makes better use of avail power, but also wondering (given equal cr), if you prefer one chamber and metal use ...as you've probably raced them, eh? |

I see/read your question. Not sure what you are saying/asking ? If you clarify what you want to know, maybe someone can give you an answer. The newly cast iron Winfield special head with crowfoot combustion chamber that is the subject of this thread, can be used on an A or B block. 1st look: I am testing this newly cast head for Tod, who will evaluate whether he will make more and/or different such heads. So far, I've tried two different head gaskets and the one that fits VERY WELL, is a Fitzgerald 1000L..steel both sides with composition center. There are probably other head gaskets that might work real well. I've tried Best gaskets. The Best 509 is close to correct fit and might work fine..this is the one that I will run first when installing head. All threaded holes are excellent/tight fit for spark plugs. The distributor hole matches an original distributor base with an excellent / tight fit ! As best I could measure the deck thickness, it is very thick at near 1/2" or more. Water pump hole threads are perfect and perfectly placed and fit the stock pump that I fitted. ALL machined surfaces are without flaw and flat ! The plug holes are 18mm and I tried a variety of 18mm plugs. All fit perfect. This head was placed onto a B block in which all 14 studs were first installed. There was NO problem with install and/or removal, as the stud holes in head match the studs in this B block ! With gasket added into equation, this head cr is 6.7:1 I've learned that if I remove the FLYCUTS above the four piston areas, that the cr should increase to 7:1 (my personal goal,eh :)) ! Hm, at 7:1 or better, this would qualify for a ....'redhead color' :D Next will come checks for compression and piston/valve clearance. |

Re: CCs for Head H.T., I personally like the crows-foot. I have an iron 6:1 regular design and a Cyclone aluminum crows-foot, both of which I've run. It's hard to get a good comparison because of different comp. ratios. Harley Davidson did a lot of research on flatheads when they were racing them and came up with a different design with a raised passageway between the in. valve and the cyl. I've seen a lot of different designs, some pretty weird. I'm planning on building my own head that will be different than all the above, still in the planning stages so don't hold your breath. When finished (if ever) I plan on comparing several designs on the dyno to compare.

I'd love to have one of your head creations with ...Brierley scribed on the top :D ! I would also like to see it weigh as much as your famous race head :eek: !! Are you talking iron flathead and/or aluminum head :confused: If cast iron, you will need to tap Tod's experience/knowledge regarding how easy (NOT)...it is to cast iron anything ! I'm thinking of making my head creation, out of 'baked clay' with combo combustion chamber...where you can just interchange different cr and chambers from a kit ..I'll call it 'half baked' head and start with 10:1 cr :rolleyes: |
Re: CCs for Head It'll be aluminum, much easier to produce. It will be about a half inch taller than stock, and thick everywhere. No fins and my JB inscribed on top. Cost will largely set by how much AL. is needed, and machining costs. Longer bolts or studs will be included.
