Pulsating brakes

My '30 CCPU pulses the brake pedal and pulses the braking rate when applying the brakes both forwards and backwards. The pickup has original mechanical brakes. Two questions; what is the easiest way to determine which wheel it is? Secondly, what is causing the pulsation, i.e warped drum, bent lug bolt etc.

Thanks

Warped drum, loose backing plate nuts and bolts, wheel bearing adjustment brake linings not making full contact with drums. Just some suggestions there will be more to come. I guess you could disconnect each brake lever clevis one at a time to isolate the offender.

Also look at the spindle pin fit in the axle, mine were loose and the brakes were all over the place.

Re: Pulsating brakes

Jack the truck up and put jack stands under all 4 corners (under the axles, not the frame). Take the brake rods loose. Front brake rods at the wheels, rear rods at the cross arm. Tighten the adjusters one click at a time as you spin the wheel by hand until they just start to grab, then back off 1 click. The drums that need to be turned or replaced will "pulse" when you spin by hand. Drums that are OK will be smooth all the way around.

When all 4 are adjusted properly, then adjust the brake rods. You will need the brake adjustment tool to hold the brake pedal at the correct points. The procedure is found in "The Red Book"

Main cause are warped drums. There is probably someone in your area that has a drum lathe and hopefully they will still know how to work it.

Re: Pulsating brakes

My 29 Tudor had a terrible pulse when I bought it, but it was very obvious where the trouble was. The right rear drum and backing plate had a bend and a flat spot from where someone lost the wheel or simply dragged the car on pavement without a wheel.
