'40 Ford Hood removal I need to remove the hood on a '40 coupe. What is the best procedure for removing the hood hinge bolts.
Also, I may end up doing this solo, so I want to make up a support system, to pick up the hood with a hoist on a trolley sliding on a monorail. Anyone done this solo ? Thank you Fordbarners. |
Re: '40 Ford Hood removal To the best of my recollection here's how I removed my 40 DeLuxe hood all by my little old self no helper. Of course, a helper sure makes it easier. I would not do this on a windy day outside.
1. Open hood and place a nice thick bed spread along the cowl edge between the rear of the hood and the cowl. 2. Place a broom stick handle or broom under the front of the hood between the hood brace and the bottom radiator splash pan. 3. Carefully undo top hinge bolt on on side and guide the hood back so it rests on the bedspread. 4. Check broom stick support. 5. Loosen and remove other side top hinge bolt and very carefully guide hood back so it rests on bed spread. Check broom stick support. 6. Carefully remove the other small screws on the small hood brace on each side. 7. Remove broom stick and lower hood hinge down by hand. 8 .Carefully lower hood down all the way.. 9. Eat a bowl of Wheaties. Then..... 10. Grasp hood sides from the front and then carefully lift and remove hood. |
Re: '40 Ford Hood removal I start out like 19Fordy, but after #6 use my hydraulic hoist (cherry picker) by extending the ram arm and C-clamping a 2x4 at the end, forming a "tee", that supports the rear inside width of the hood. Heavily padding the 2x4 ends and ram at the front will prevent any damage, and allow the hood to be easily raised off the car and moved to a table, etc.

Re: '40 Ford Hood removal Thank you 19 Forty & V8 Bob. That's what I needed to know.

Re: '40 Ford Hood removal I really like v8Bob's idea. Much less anxiety.

Re: '40 Ford Hood removal Hope the forty hood removal worked out. Thinking about the other end, when replacing trunk lid support arms on a forty convert, is there any adjustment that can help the trunk lid set smooth with the body, anybody?

Re: '40 Ford Hood removal The hinges align the trunk lid and yes, they are adjustable.
You can lower or raise the supports at the lower attachment point. If the lid fit properly prior to the new supports, then the hinges are okay as is. "Play" with the bottom attachment point(s) of the support(s). |
