Painted running boards
 

I am wondering if anyone has used that clear film they use over headlights and body parts to protect running boards. My 40 P/U boards are painted red like the truck, I can step over my side but the passenger side may take a beating. I don't like the look of the aluminum step plates and am looking for another solution.

Truck bed coating tinted to match your red paint. I think LineX does it.

Thanks I did know about that I had forgot it was tintable, I kind of like the transparent l coating idea just didn't know if it could be applied over the ribs and look good.

I just did my 39 PU running boards in the commmercialy applied hot black bed liner spray, with my four fenders underside & inner front skirts, with longevity as a priority.
You might do very well to look closely at the textured surface that results from this.
Perhaps one of the DIY kits can be made to lay more smoothly, but tinting will be off.
Perhaps taking your running boards to be buffed up, and then have multiple coats of
clear applied will be more to your liking... Do a few test before committing to one.
Lastly, how about a simple strip of color close carpet with clips, or black rubber ?

I have been trying to find something that would not look out of place, I have a lot of clear on them now but all it will take is a stone on a shoe and yikes, I know it's a truck, but new running boards painted bright red and shiney, I hate to have them dug up.

You might a pad made up with a none slip surface that goes next to the running board for people getting in and out of course that won't keep kids off of them at Car Shows etc.

Amen to that. When the boards were painted on the truck the painter and I kicked around several ideas about how to keep them looking like new including clear coating with multiple layers. We concluded that short of using Linex or some similar product that doesn't show scratches there is no paint product that will keep them pristine. Our solution was to shoot a semi gloss black that could be used for recoating when they started to look really bad. After 6 years of wear and tear a few scratches and boot marks are visible, but that's to be expected and no one, including judges, has commented on them.
