Re: pushrod cheater What is the purpose of this tool??

Re: pushrod cheater You use it so you can set the clearances on the valves in your flathead with only 2 rotations of the crankshaft. It's just a timesaver. To a lot of us, the name, "Pushrod Cheater" is kinda misleading, because we are used to "pushrods" as those long skinny things on overhead valve engines. When you remember that Ford referred to the actual valve lifters as "pushrods", things become a lot clearer.
You can do the same thing by setting the valve at it's highest extemsion and then rotating the crank 1 full rotation to set that valve. Since there are 16 valves, this method require 16 rotations of the crankshaft. This cuts turning time by a factor of 8, thus the term "cheater". |

Re: pushrod cheater How much are these here indexers?

Re: pushrod cheater I have a couple of old valve indexers like shown in the famous Racer Brown photo. They are for use with the crab distibuters. I actually had made a home made one to work the same. I cut a disk from some sheet metal and marked off the firing order around the rim. I attached with a sleeve and a set screw to the rotor shaft on the crab. I got the engine to TDC and firing on #1 and put a pointer to #1 cylinder on the disk. I figured if the cylinder was firing, the valves would be shut. You only turn the engine two revolutions. Worked fine.
