1940 pickup spare tire holder
 

Any one have picture or dirgram of the exact place to mount the spare tire holder on a 1940 ford pickup bed. Thanks everyone.

They typically mounted on the outer right side of the box and running board but there were also some duel mounts. The fender would have a "dimple" that allowed clearance for the tire. The bracket was bolted through the running board to the frame and I think to the side of the box (the same as the '38/'39 pickups). A spare wasn't just bolted on, the running board and the fender were made specifically for use with a spare tire.

Although there was a hole and bracket under the right (passenger) running board, they were not used for the 1940 and 41 pickups. Don't know why the hole was there, probably Henry had some holes left over from the earlier models. The spare was bolted to the side of the bed on the right side and the fender is dimpled for clearance. Green Book has drawing of the spare mount.

Howard Towne's "two great trucks" pg. 30 has an exploded picture example of the spare tire carrier and a good explanation on pg. 29

Pg. 25 does have a picture of the wheel and tire mounted on right side, hope this helps. Even if you have a 39 like I do this book has a lot of good references for 38-41 as there are a lot of similar components. Scott

The 1940-41 spare tire mounted to bracket attached to the passenger side of the bed. I have seen them attached in various configurations. The running board mount was discontinued after 1939 when the wide 5 bolt pattern was replaced with 5x51/2. The hole in the running board remained and even the aftermarket boards have a hole that can be drilled out from the underside.
