Re: does dipper tray need filled

the dipper tray will fill through the oil fill tube----if you loosen up the oil return pipe ,remove the spark plugs and crank the engine till oil comes out the return you will know the oil pump works and the valve chamber is filled

Re: does dipper tray need filled

the purpose of a QT down the dizzy hole is to oil up the valve chamber so that the mains can get oil

the tray gets it from the filler neck

Re: does dipper tray need filled

Presumably you used assembly lube on the bearings? If not, put a quart down the dist hole so the valve chamber fills and the oil tubes to the center and rear mains are oiled. This will not fill the front section which feeds the front main. Crank the engine as noted above to get oil flow to the front section.

You can pull the one nut holding the cable clamp, back off the screw holding the distributor and lift it up. As long as you don't mess to much with it you will not change the timing. If you have to take the distributor off for some reason later it's the same thing. Just remember to torque the nut back down.

Easiest to follow Kurt's instructions as given ! You can also be assured that the oil pump is doing its job...which is to fill all areas/voids !

Yea it's the valve chamber you fill from the dist. hole. If you used assembly lube you should be alright. Crank it for a couple of seconds with the key off and the oil pump will fill the chamber.

Remove the oil drain tube from the valve cover then squirt a quart of oil into the valve chamber. This is a way to get around from removing the dist if that's an issue for you. .. This will prime the main bearings and you won't have to crank it over dry,, assy lube or not waiting for the oil pump to supply the oil up... After starting leave the lower oil pipe bolt loose to prove out you have oil pressure by oil returning to the pan....

not a new motor but i pulled pan and cleaned, its all clean and dry, guess will just pull dist add the quart,do not have clamp under head bolt, might be enough slack to lift up(its on my doodlebug)
