Lock washers on the rear transmission bearing retainer 1 Attachment(s)
When I dismantled the transmission I am now rebuilding, there were lock washers used on the four bolts that fasten the rear bearing retainer to the transmission. The washers were Ford lock washers that have the serrations on them, not modern lock washers someone decided to install. The bolts have safety wire to keep them from coming loose. There is a slight concern that if the bolts go in too far they could possibly interfere with the cluster gear, thus the lock washers. In Les Andrews volume 1 (picture below), it says nothing about lock washers. I have heard there are errors in Les' book, so I thought I would check here to see what Fordbarn people think. It may not make any difference either way, I just want to do it the way Ford did it.
Added note: All the bolts used on the transmission had lock washers on them. Rusty Nelson |
Re: Lock washers on the rear transmission bearing retainer Vince,
You are probably right. In Mike Isbell's Standard Hardware booklet is shows 7/16" lock washers along with the 7/16-20 bolts under the transmission section. The lock washers might be used to insure the bolts don't go into the case too far. I can't find my PPL. Rusty Nelson |
Re: Lock washers on the rear transmission bearing retainer If it's just to take up the length of the bolt why not use shorter bolts or just flat washers... I think it's to lock in the bolt

Re: Lock washers on the rear transmission bearing retainer Yes, use lock washers, A-22300, four of them.

Re: Lock washers on the rear transmission bearing retainer I have dismantled over 7 A transmissions and all had lockwashers installed

Re: Lock washers on the rear transmission bearing retainer What are: "The washers were Ford lock washers that have the serrations on them"? (A-22300 ?)
Are they internal or external star washers? Or? I looked on Bratton's site and all I saw was split lockwashers. |

Re: Lock washers on the rear transmission bearing retainer Thanks Tom, this older fellow learned something new today. Methinks I'll go check my stock of old non-plated lock washers to see ifn there's any of that type in there.
