Cleaning exhaust soot Does anyone have a good process for cleaning the black exhaust soot resulting from our fine gasoline. I'm getting the soot on the back of the RR bumper and supporting brackets, so there is a mixture of black enamel and chrome surfaces to clean.
I guess a small down turned tip on the tailpipe might help as well. Thanks, John |
Re: Cleaning exhaust soot I succefully used Simple Green on the firewall to remove the soot from a leaking exhaust manifold. No damage to the paint and came off without a lot of elbow grease.

Re: Cleaning exhaust soot I would try WD-40 and a soft cloth.

Re: Cleaning exhaust soot It's about a thousand miles of build up. Engine doesn't seem to be running too rich, the GAV can be turned in until it starts running a bit rough. then back out 1/4 turn.
That however is a different question for another post. |
Re: Cleaning exhaust soot A down turned chrome extension from the speed shops worked for me. Not 100% but much better.

Re: Cleaning exhaust soot I use a mild liquid dish soap and warm water with a soft terry cloth towell that napa sells (kind of pricey) to wipe down everything. For clean and waxing: paint, nickel, chrome - we all probably have a shelf full of products we like. Try the soap and warm water first, it will breakdown the exhaust buildup. I do sometimes use simple green, but only after the water and soap.

Re: Cleaning exhaust soot Diesel fuel on a rag takes it right off with no scrubbing, no paint damage.
|
Re: Cleaning exhaust soot Well, the Simple Green worked, but nothing else really did. However I had it cleaned up before trying diesel fuel. The backside of the bumper bars were the worst, and it took several applications of SG, but they came out sparkling.
Thanks for all the suggestions. There isn't anything on my A that someone here has dealt with, you guys are great. I am looking for a down-turned exhaust tip. John |
