12 volt alt on 48 Ford I'm thinking of converting my 48 Ford to 12 volt. Can you buy a bracket that will take a GM 1 wire alternator without machine work. Why I want to go this route is if I should have to replace on the road I could go to any parts store and get a stock GM alternator 1 wire. thanks

Re: 12 volt alt on 48 Ford Available from most suppliers. I got mine from these guys:

Re: 12 volt alt on 48 Ford Google "alternator bracket" "flathead". And simply convert a GM 3-wire to a 1-wire by pigtailing a small wire from the small #2 terminal to the alternator's main output terminal. The small #1 terminal is not connected. GM 3-wire alternators are much more common than the 1-wire only types.

Re: 12 volt alt on 48 Ford Certified auto electric in Ohio, but re-think that GM alt they have a great Ford one wire with bracket for our application.

Re: 12 volt alt on 48 Ford As Jack said.
You will probably have to find a smaller diameter pulley to run on a flathead . |
Re: 12 volt alt on 48 Ford Have a 12v 55 Amp Delco 10SI 3-wire Alt with 4 inch +- belt pulley on my '47. Some here prefer a Ford unit but I have never had a problem with this Delco. My Alt came to me wired as a 1-wire set-up and (1) the alternator would not charge at start-up unless I raced the engine, and (2) my lighting was typically dim due to low SYSTEM VOLTAGE (not bad wiring, under-sized wiring or poor grounding). I corrected the wiring arrangement and immediately found that the 3-wire arrangement works better. Wire #1 being the output to the Batt terminal at the solenoid.... Wire #3 (system voltage sensor wire - usually white color) also goes to the battery terminal at the solenoid which allows the alternator to properly sense the actual SYSTEM VOLTAGE at its connection to the battery, AND allows the Alt to respond to it .... and Wire #2 (field wire - typically brown color) goes to the ignition switch via a 10 watt -10 ohm resistor (rather than a 1960's dash glow-light) which in-turn allows the ignition switch to "excite" the Alt into action immediately, even at idle rpms. (I bought the resistor at my local Radio Shack) I recommend searching other threads/postings at the various forums and exploring the internet regarding these concepts.

Re: 12 volt alt on 48 Ford 4 Attachment(s)
You could consider going with an L.D. Becker 12v alternator onversion. See attached pictures. He uses the front mounting bracket w/bearing from a stock Ford intake mount generator. This could be used with/without a fan mounted to front of pulley.

Re: 12 volt alt on 48 Ford I like that L.D. Becker conversion.
You can get an alternator bracket from almost any place. Speedway, Summit, Jegs they all carry them. Check eBay. They seem to run in the $30-$50 range. |
