29 2 Tooth Steering Tube From a 7 Tooth
 

As requested recently here is how to make a 29 style 2 tooth from a 7 tooth column. Pictured below is my original 29 2 tooth tube and a few 7 tooth columns.

To make this mod using a 2 tooth box you will need the 43" steering shaft as used in 29 and part of the way through 30.

As you can see the 2 tooth column tube is 36 3/4" as measured on the bottom from the end of the quadrant (not the upper bushing). So cut the 7 tooth at that length. I have found it best to use a band saw and make sure the tube is level and square with the saw. some shimming of the tube is usually needed.

Next is to duplicate the the split. This follows the weld seam and is 1 1/8" long. I use a 3/32 cutoff wheel in the angle grinder. After all is done I clean the cuts up with a die grinder using a sanding drum.

Since I still have two more 7 tooth boxed to disassemble before I go use the band saw at a friends house I did not cut one today. I also still need to come up with more 43" steering shaft. The only one I have here right now has bad threads. Have a real nice 44" shaft and 2 other 44" shafts that need repair to trade if anyone has some extra 43" shafts laying around. Rod

No problem, now that I am healed up enough. Who was it that was repairing the threads on the steering shafts? Can not seem to find that info in my contact book. Rod

Rod,
I am a little confused. We have the original 29 7 tooth column in the truck now. According to what you are saying the column should be 43" long. If I remove this column from the truck and disassemble it I should cut the tube to a length of 36-3/4" . This is the length of a 3 -31 2 tooth column.
If this is correct then what do I do after this? If you have the parts I need let me know.

The worm gear shaft should be 43", which was used in 29 and 30.(the later shaft was 44"). Cutting the 7 tooth off at 36 3/4". No other parts needed other than what you need for rebuild which are carried by model a part vendors. Also looking at Berts catalog they do carry the 43"shaft. You will need to purchase the 29 keyed steering wheel and the correct length light switch rod for the 29 2 tooth. Rod

I had a slight typo. The length of the split is 1 1/8" not 1 3/8". I edited it now, but if anyone copied it for future use you might want to correct it also. Rod
