HELP! '31 Model A coupe?
 

My mom bought this Model A a few years back from an enthusiast in Ft Worth. She recently passed away and we need this to go to someone that can appreciate it and use it. The car runs. I need help knowing what I have, how much it is worth, and how to sell it. This car is in Abilene, TX. Thanks!

$3000-$4500. Lots of caveats on these kinds of estimates. I think a lot of guys don't look at the asking price as much as they weigh what it will cost to get the car where they want it to be, mechanically and cosmetically. Bringing a car up has gotten very expensive, and resale prices are comparatively low. Also, even though you have what looks like a deluxe, that takes more $$$ to restore, and coupes are plentiful.

It looks like a good driver, so if I bought it I'd lube everything and make sure the brakes and other mechanicals were good, then just drive it.

As mentioned, bringing it up to high point judging standards can be expensive.

$4500 to 5k is exactly the price range I've been seeing on the internet lately for that condition.

If you can take the prospective buyer for a 'test drive' and the car runs as it should (lots going on here) then it should bring about $5,000 to $7,000 or so. If, on closer inspection, and if it does not run, then it could drop down a $1,000 or so dollars. Again, this is 'shooting from the hip' and from an 'arm chair'. I would never buy such a car without careful and full personal inspection.

The best thing you can do to maximize your selling price, is to make sure it runs and can be driven by a prospective buyer. If not, you are asking the prospective buy to close his eyes and stick his hand into a bucket of 'who knows what'. And in doing so, the risk of the unknown drops the price down significantly.

that car would bring 7500. all day long here in NJ

wish I could find about 10 of those here in running condition for 4500. each...................

So, Obviously the price depends on where you are in the country! Most of the westerners are kind of low, while the easterners think that it's worth more. I bought a 30, which is pretty identical to it for $5000 about 3 or 4 years ago ( in my profile, my albums, Scroll down). The term "Running"really doesn't mean much. How's it running! And how's the front end? Steering boxes and spring shackle bushings are a PITA on all Mod A s, expensive and a nuisance. For those who covet "originality", that interior will never do. So clean all the leaves out of it, lubricate everything, change the oil, and put it out there and try for a higher price, and be ready to come down a little, and Who know what it will bring.

Back in the late '50s, I tried to buy one like this. I walked away from it when the guy was firm on $45 and wouldn't budge.

Times sure change. I did the same thing with my neighbor's 1930 Coupe in 1971. He wanted $45 for it, but it needed paint and upholstery, so I thought it was too far gone. :eek: What a dumb move.:mad:

BTW, I was thinking the same price as Mitch, no less than $6,500 if it's a good driver.

Like many things in life, it's only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Lot's of folks may say it's worth this or that, but the seller and a buyer with cash will ultimately dictate the actual price. As a seller; always start high because a buyer will always start low.

first. dont sell. value is wide. i think they are heavily devalued as all fun things are in this crunch(180mph super bikes are a steal right now 1500-2500). i have seen similar cars asking 9000 not that they got it. i live near detroit sorta. i see tudors or fordors asking a couple thousand higher than the prices quoted but I never see coupes for sale in my state. the car is close to nice. with some cleaning and the cheapest paint shop black paint job it would look restored in photos(not in person) and be worth more or perfect for driver condition. you should drive it and enjoy it and restore it to the place your mother would have liked it. but i do understand if there is no interest or fighting with the family. the problem with the market is that there is more people who need to sell model a's i think than want to buy one for a reasonable price. i would list the car for 7500 and then lower the price each month.


edit: like rick said start high buyers will come with low ball offers. make them make a few offers and get their number and tell them you will call them back. if the buyer is trying to pressure you walk away. its a nice looking coupe someone will love to have it. if i had 5000 to give i would think i was stealing it.

I agree Ronn, same thing here in New York, if they were that price here, I would buy two.

I would suggest contacting the local. model A club.
Ask for someone to come out and help you.
They know local market and after running the car will
Give you far better local market value than we armchair
Bidders. And....they might know club member who
Might be interested.

Thank you for the help guys. That is good information. This is a cool car it just needs to be in someone's hands that knows what to do with her. I have a shipper that can haul it anywhere so that is not a problem. The previous owner, I believe, was in the Ft Worth Model A club. It is a driver.
