Front brake operating shaft question 1 Attachment(s)
I bought a front brake operating shaft at a swap meet a couple years ago (top shaft in the picture below). I compared it to the other operating shafts I have and it is longer by 5/8". The standard model A shaft is shown below the shaft I bought at the swap meet. The longer shaft is the same diameter and the head is identical to a regular front shaft. I am wondering what the shaft fits. Is it an AA truck brake shaft? Any help identifying the shaft would be appreciated.

Re: Front brake operating shaft question Like you I bought one many years ago at a swap meet not realizing it was longer. I never checked further but assumed it might be for a AA.

Re: Front brake operating shaft question Okay,..I looked it up,..cause I don't know AA.
The " A-2076-B and A-2077-B,.."Front brake shaft-RH and LH"". Have A prefix's and not AA,..BUT the arms and pins are AA. Make sense Rusty? |
Re: Front brake operating shaft question The early 28 shafts were slightly longer. But I did not think it more than 1/8" longer than the later ones. Rod

The PPL, dated 1-1-28 shows the same part numbers as the 7-1-31 PPL. Which part is longer?....you said the shaft, correct. Then the levers are a different width? |
Re: Front brake operating shaft question The original shafts from my 28 were longer than the repop which have the B suffix. I posted this on the old Fordbarn, but have deleted the pic's since them. Will dig and see if I still have the original shafts to compare and take new pic's. Rod

Re: Front brake operating shaft question 1 Attachment(s)
The AA actuators are the same as the A except the AA arms are longer.
Bob Found this in the green parts book. B2077 shaft 28-33 car and truck 7 15/16" BB2077 33-34 truck 8.54", 35-37 truck 8.8". |
Re: Front brake operating shaft question I just measured from under the head to the end where the lever is riveted on and it is exactly 8". I guess that means it is might be for an AA truck as Bob C's measurement is very close at 7 15/16". Bob is your measurement close to 8" like mine or 7 15/16"? Thanks for the help Bob.

Re: Front brake operating shaft question The parts book says the measurements are overall length.
The A and AA shaft are the same. Bob |
Re: Front brake operating shaft question 1 Attachment(s)
FYI - For the AA:
Through 1929, the front brake operating shaft assembly was the same as the A chassis. Starting January 1930, the front brake lever (AA-2084) was used. The remainder of the front brake operating shaft assembly was the same as the A chassis. |
Re: Front brake operating shaft question The total length is 8 9/16". That is very close to what Bob C posted for a BB2077 33-34 truck at 8.54" long. I suppose I could cut it off to the size of the model A operating shaft and drill a new hole in it for the lever, since I don't have a 33-34 truck. I guess I could also post it on the early V8 with the measurements and see if anyone wants it. It looks like NOS with no wear I can feel or see. Thanks all who posted.

Re: Front brake operating shaft question DJ, I looked through my used brake parts bin and they are not in there. Likely I sent them to the guy who bought my early 28 brakes as I could not get the repop shafts to work with the tapered housings and the NOS actuator arms I bought from Vince or the arms that I took off originally. Re: Front brake operating shaft question Thanks, Vince. After Bob C's post and your post, it certainly appears it is a 1933-34 BB truck operating shaft. I don't know how many 33-34 BB trucks there are that need an operating shaft for one side. The shaft appears to be like new.
