1933 ford - 56 ford steering
 

QUESTION how hard to install 56 ford truck steering in my 33 ford.
also what other years are a replacement ?????

The f1s will also work. The common way to modify the boxes is to cut the mount off and machine it and weld it back together. There is also a add-on wedge that will work but it can lead to interference issues with the exhaust, etc. On my 33 with an f1 box I modified the frame to except it.

Hi Nick, I had Neal Jennings rebuild a '34 box for me and it turned out amazingly good. Neal is here on the Fordbarn and lives in Atascadero. The good news is that a 34 box fits right into a 33....

To answer your question the 56 box makes your car feel like you have power steering. I have one on my three window. You will need to open the large hole in the frame a little, You will need to fab a plate that fits the inside of the frame rail. You can also buy this plate from some some of the dealers. The plate is 1/2 inch thick on the end that goes back to the firewall and tapers down to 1/8 inch on the other end. It looks like a thin slice of pie. It will have the large hole in the center and the three bolt holes to mount the box. Two holes will lineup you will have to drill the third hole in the frame.
You will need to take the 56 box a part and remove the end pate and use the 34 end plate so your horn rod and light switch will work. The hardest part is you will need to remove the worm gear off of both boxes and use the 34 shaft with the 56 worn gear press on the 34 shaft. Or you can cut the shafts and add the 34 shaft to the top of the 56 shaft. If you go this way just make a sleeve to join the two shafts. Don't just ring weld the sleeve. Drill four 1/4 inch holes in the sleeve and plug weld. Tig weld,is the way to go here.

If you decide to go the welding route, Vern Tardel makes a great mount, and has instructions on how to.
I used a flapper wheel to " machine " mine down. Just take your time.

Randy Gross does a modified box for the A's. Not sure if he has one for the 33. Try PM'ng him.
