Bad switch ,is it an original pop out ?

Re: Battery/electrical

Fix the switch ASAP and disconnect the battery cable for now, or you could burn up the coil, or even set it on fire.

Re: Battery/electrical

I agree with a possible switch issue , but also watch out for overheating the coil / burning up the points because the ignition is left on. If the points are closed this will drain the battery and can also cause a fire from the coil. Disconnect the battery till you fix the problem

Here is what Mike K said on the duplicate post to this one,

Quote:

You didn't state whether you have an original ignition switch and wiring or something else.

If you have an original popout switch and armored cable you need to push it IN 'till it clicks after removing the key. Simply removing the key does not turn it off. If wired as it was originally the only way the ignition will continue to function after pushing the popout in is if the switch is defective. If it is rewired with another switch you may have either a defective switch or another electrical problem.

Re: Battery/electrical

If you have a Pop-out switch, just turning the key will not turn it off. You have to push it in.

Re: Battery/electrical

You could also just turn off the gas and let the engine die.
