is it possible? I live in Calif. and am looking at a running Model A for sale from a car dealer in Oregon without a title. They say it comes with a Bill of Sale but no title. I checked with DMV and they say I will not be able to register it in Cal. without a title. Anyone have any ideas around this? Thanks, Bill

Re: is it possible? A dealer can not sell a car in Oregon with out a title. It is just that simple. The dealer needs to get a title for the car with matching numbers before they can sell it. I did work for a car (new/used) here in Oregon. Even buying from a privet party, they need to have a title in order to sell a car to be legal.

Re: is it possible? It is possible to get a title with just a bill of sale, but it would be likely that you would have to get a third party involved. This would have to be someone you trust in a state that has a bonded title option and the numbers would have to be inspectable and match the numbers on the bill of sale. Some states want to inspect the engine number and others want to inspect the chassis number. This whole process with the logistics would be a PIA, so you could likely be a huge bargaining chip to really undercut the selling price. Rod

Plus, I've never trusted dealers. They have one thing in mind and that's money in their pocket, not in your best interest. |

I think I would check with someone else at your DMV. As with most government agencies if you ask 3 different people the same question you're apt to get 3 different answers. Talk with a boss in a state office [ not county]. Most states have an VIN/ serial number inspection agency to handle such problems. |
Re: is it possible? Call the DMV back and ask them about getting a "bonded title". By the way, did the dealer in Oregon explain why the vehicle did not have a title? It might help to know why there is no title when you call the DMV. Having this information might suggest other solutions, or course if he stole it there are probably not other solutions available. I agree with Bill's comment in post #5.

Re: is it possible? Let me REPEAT a car dealer in OREGON can not sell a car WITHOUT A TITLE. Does not matter if it's a Model A, T or what not.
