Thanks

Subject: 1931 Model A Roadster Youth Project

Dear Westcott Folks, I am a member of the Adirondack A's Model A Ford Club of New York. We are currently engaged in reconstructing a 1931 Roadster in our youth program. We received this car completely apart with some previously purchased reproduction parts. The reproduction subframe came to us in pieces -Two sides and the three crossmembers. These crossmembers need to be cut to the correct length. We are looking to assemble this subframe and then attach it to the actual frame. Unfortunately, we did not receive the original subframe or any part of it. Do you have the dimensions that we can construct this correctly? Any guidance is appreciated.

Several Photos of our project are located at the following link:

You can ask Ken at Brookville Roadster by e-mail but they are closed until Jan. 4th 2016
They make a steel reproduction Model A roadster body and they should have all the dimensions. Good luck with your project. Mike

Oooo. Tough situation, for sure.

Generally how this is approached is completely 'old school' where you mock up/test fit the parts, mark them, cut them and PRAY that you got it right.

Axle spacing fore-aft is probably the most critical part of the equation. If you get that right, the rest can be extrapolated with a Tape Measure and a Sharpie.

Just remember that if you cut it off twice it will still be too short.

Woody, I'm a little confused about what you want. If I'm correct , you want the dimensions of the sills? (2 sides and 3 cross members) I know that the coupes and roadsters have steel subframes and I don't think that's what you're asking for. If I'm correct, and you have these parts. Then it's a matter of locating to the frame bolt holes and preserving that configuration. I screwed and glued mine. Go to my profile and pictures. In the album," My A", and you'll find pictures (They're horribly out of order, you'll have search around) of my new sills and the way I aligned them. I used Elmer's Carpenter's Glue and small wood screws. I hope this helps.
Terry
