1940 1 Ton Express Truck Rear Bumper
 

Can anyone please tell me whether there is a difference between the front and rear bumbers. I know that the braces are not the same.

The attached page from the Greenbook shows the 40 Tonner rear bumper. It looks like the front bumper but has a different part# which suggests that it isn't the same as the front bumper. (photo1) Many of these trucks came with no rear bumper and the owner added his own. My Tonner had a 4X10 piece of oak for a bumper. Instead of that setup I used a plain steel bumper and brackets for a 48-50 F-1 from C&G Ford. I added a X member to the bottom of the frame rails to anchor a class "A" hitch carrier which was also bolted to the bumper. (photo 2) Finally I installed a toe plate on top of the bumper to make it easier to get in and out of the bed. It also holds the license plate and the backup light. (photo 3) Another way of dealing with a "missing" bumper.

Thanks, I appreciate your assistance. I have a spare front bumper in excellent condition and thought to make it fit at the back. I do not intend to use the truck as a daily driver but will try and restore it to as close to 100% original condition as possible. I cannot see any after "new" welding to the part below the deck and it seems like a bumper similar to the front was originally installed as the slots for the bumper brackets is still visible.

Again I appreciate your input as not a lot of enthusiasts is around in the small village I stay.

I wonder if it would have been the same as the tonner panel. Which also looks very close to the front. Mines under the snow right now or I would post a pic.
