What winter tires?
 

I know that some of the members drive their cars in winter. My present Cooker tires are not for snow, definitely. What can you recommend for stock rims?

If I were to drive and old car in snow today, i would get 15" or 16" 5- 5 1/2 pattern wheel 6" wide. Then get snow tires and if you really want to get out use chains. Radial tires are easy to find and you wouldn't, be going to fast.

I drive all winter with the stock Coker tires. Work for me.

You are THE MAN!
I had to do some work on my garage door and took my '39 out of the garage. It was the first snow of the season. 2 hours and 2 inches of snow later I barely made it back into the garage (the entrance has a slight slope up). Cookers were slipping all the way, even with the slightest application of go-fast pedal.

Some 6.00 X 16 Snow tread tires in the For Sale section right now. $45 each. Not mine, but maybe they would work for you.

There's nothing like a good old pair of studded snow tires.

You'll notice in all of my videos that I was actually moving. Starting on a snow or ice covered slope from dead stop is definitely the biggest challenge. I try to avoid parking any place that I have to do that when snow covers the surface. But, once you get moving, as long as you keep moving (that's the key), you can keep moving. :)

Hey Mike I got a ticket in New Jersey with studded snow tires . Just saying, I guess they tear up the road or they can be like bullets when they let loose.

"Russia" is pretty huge with a wide variety of climates. What are the winter weather conditions where you live? How much snow and ice do you receive? How well do the roads get cleared after it snows?

Studded tires are great when the roads are icy, but aren't the best choice if the roads are cleared well. All those little metal studs actually reduce the amount of tread on the pavement if the pavement is clear and dry.

They vary from state to state. In Pa, they're seasonally legal from November thru mid-April.

Metal studs illegal in NY State. They stopped selling them here at that time.

I have bias ply Coker's but I once heard the use of tire chains on radial tires may void manufacturer's warranty (?)

However, I keep a set of the old "Mud Hooks" in the trunk for emergency situations; easy to put on and off. Think some places still make/sell them.

In western Pa.my local Flynns tire co.would not stud 2 tires.They said they wouldn't do it unless all four corners were studded,and quoted some regulation.:confused:

Unfortunately, the warm varieties are found only in small parts of Russia. Currently I live about 80 miles north from Moscow. We usually have snow from November till the end of March. Major highway are mostly free from snow and ice but small roads and streets in small towns are usually covered with them. That's why I'm not a big fan of studded tires - we drive on snow AND pavement.

Thank you, but Russian customs rules make it virtually impossible for a private person to buy tires abroad. The only way is to bring them in your luggage when you cross the border in person.

Sounds like it is going to depend on what type of tires are locally available. Because of the weather conditions there has to be local all-weather or snow tires. The size would be the issue. Something we did in the 50s and 60s was mount up snow tires on separate rims and then just switch the wheels out. If you can get rims in a size that tires are available in that might work.

I run studs on my Volvo all winter in pa. I only put studs on the front. I have every other stud left out of the tire because most of the driving that I do is on dry roads but when I do hit the side roads or starting out from a start having the studs helps a lot.

I live in the sunny south, so i don't have to worry 'bout chains, studs, stubs, etc. ("xcuse my yelling")
