Front cross member...
 

Every time I take something apart I find something else that needs repair...

This time I discovered that my front cross member is bolted in place......

It would seem that everything on this pickup has been changed/altered in some way over the years....

I`m not sure if my eyes are playing tricks on me, but the pick up looks to be a 28 or 29 and the front cross member looks to be a 30-31

Are you planing to show your truck?
Is the cross member loose, cracked or in some other way defective?

It's a truck and as such was used more like a truck back then what most are used for today. Something broke, they fixed it and went on their way. My opinion, leave it alone.

I have a 29 ccpu it also had a bolted in front cross member.The frame was shot but. i kept the cross member.

The first pic showing some bolt heads the markings indicate they are high tensile bolts. I would as Mike suggested give it a check over and leave it alone.But it's your truck.

I was thinking the same thing. Unless you are taking things apart to paint the frame, I'd leave it for now, if it's otherwise in good shape. As JW said, it looks like the later crossmember with the lower radiator mounts, so you will have to add about 1/4" shims to make up the difference.

I agree...it is tight and they are grade 5 bolts. I will leave it alone.

But is it a '29 or a later crossmember? The pads where the radiator mount are raised slightly......

Randy, The surface for the rubber radiator pad was about level with the frame side rail. In 1929, October, the pad was lowered to be below the frame side rail for the taller radiator. More rubber shim is the fix.

It looks like its a late 29 or later cross member then....and two of those radiator mounting pads on each side ought to make it work..

I also agree with keeping the bolts. I have two rigs with bolts and have had no problems.
