39 accelerator pedal
 

My accelerator pedal keeps flopping over to the right side. seems like there is a fairly good size hole in the floor that the rod goes through. Has anyone had this? How can it be corrected?

Make sure the bolt at the bottom of the pedal hinge is tight. If your pedal is severely worn, it might be time for a new pedal.

Thanks - I didn't see that bolt. It did take a couple tightening turns. Still feels a lil sloppy, will take for ride later.

Is there a nut behind that bolt?
How tough to replace pedal? Can't tell how that rod is connected.

Yes, there is a nut behind the bolt and it may be part of the floor board....CRS at work.

The hardest part for me in replacing the pedal is getting the throttle rod inserted into the receptacle on the back of the pedal. It should be a tight fit.

ok thanks, ya that is very tight fit on pedal. Lets hope my tightening the nut did the trick.

If I remember correctly, there's a T-nut on the backside of the floorboard.

Curious - A tee nut meaning you don't need to get a wrench on it to tighten bolt?

Periodically, the screw holding the gas pedal to the floor in my ’39 CS will loosen up and the pedal will ‘flop’ from side to side. It’s an easy fix to tighten however, if the pedal in your car is worn at the back side where the accelerator rod attaches to it, you should replace the pedal. I use a small dab of grease on the end of the accelerator rod and clamp a vice grip to the rod, next to the floorboard, to steady it so the pedal can be pushed over the end of the rod. I just recently did this on my ’39.

Tightening that bolt did the trick.

Adileo I believe the T nut looks like this pic. I did not need to get a wrench on opposite side of bolt to tighten. Thank goodness:)

Inserting the short throttle linkage into the hard rubber pedal is (as stated above) a bugger. What I do is, remove the small linkage from the spring piece that's attached to the firewall, fold the pedal back and spray a little WD40 into the female receptacle on the pedal, grasp the small linkage in a vice grip pliers, heat the male end with hot water and thrust it into the pedal. It should slip right in.

Too old to stay bent for very long:)

That small linkage that goes from the pedal through the floor. Does that just screw into the main linkage?

No, it has the same type of spring loaded connection as your carb linkages have. It should be accessible through the hole in the wood floor board.

I had the same problem with my new pedal. There was a post from a while ago where the rubber pocket was cut and the throttle rod was pushed in. Guy said he never had a problem after that. I just put a little GE sealer on it. I drove it for a few hundred miles this summer with no problem. Prior to that it would "jump" off often.

Yep, a "t" nut, integral of the wood floor board.
The repop gas pedals lack two small "spikes" that dug in to the wood floor board upon installation. Those spikes kept the pedal in place.
The bolt with split type lock washer should not come loose.

So that was the problem, eh? With my new pedal, having the problem of it not staying in place, I just drilled another hole in the base and screwed it down. Has not come loose since.
